While many flights may be grounded and while Amtrak is canceling some trains "south" of Washington, DC, Friday thru Sunday, August 26, 27, and 28 in anticipation of Hurricane Irene, according to a release, which gives a list that doesn't include the trains that run through Charlottesville: the Crescent, the Cardinal, and the Northeast Regional.

While a reporter was unable to reach an Amtrak spokesperson for a verbal confirmation, the list seems to suggest that the Charlottesville trains will run through the storm.

The canceled trains are the ones through Richmond including the Auto Train, Silver Star Train between New York and Jacksonville, the Silver Meteor, the Palmetto, and the Carolinian.

I was on the Northeast Regional today and it arrived one hour late into the station in Charlottesville this evening due to a tree on the tracks, 10 minutes outside town.

The latest information on tomorrow's schedule, according to the conductor on the train, is that a decision will be made late this evening, so check before you depart in the morning to confirm the 8:52am departure. The problem may occur with the return, which is more uncertain, as the storm tracks up the East Coast. It would be wise to pack rain gear and have a fallback plan should the return trip be cancelled tomorrow evening.
