Worst crash aftermath: Doris Campbell, 33, injured October 3 in a head-on collision on Old Lynchburg Road, dies October 10 and becomes the 14th fatality in Albemarle this year. Brandon Wilson, 28, of Madison, has been charged with driving under the influence in the crash, and police say other charges are pending.

Worst school bus crash: Ten Burley Middle School students go to the hospital after a wreck October 7 in front of the Albemarle County Office Building, according to the Daily Progress. Bus driver Rebecca A. Merchant, 36, of Gordonsville, is charged with reckless driving and is put on administrative leave.

Worst ATV accident: Justin "Bubba" T. Minter, who worked at Belmont Barber, dies in a four-wheeler accident on October 8, his 21st birthday.

Worst visit to the Smithsonian: Local activist David Swanson is pepper sprayed during a peace demonstration at the Air & Space Museum October 8.

Most robbed: The West Park Market on Four Seasons Drive has been hit five times in the past year. Police arrest Sara Catherine Davis, 22, of Stanardsville, and Wayne Martize Clark, 23, of Ruckersville. The pair are charged with three counts of robbery and three counts of use of a firearm, with Clark also picking up felon-in-possession-of-a-firearm and grand larceny charges.

Most foiled: Albemarle police officer Jay Morris spots Patrick T. Gibson, 20, leaving Oak Hill Market around 2:30am October 6, according to a release. After a brief foot chase, Gibson is arrested with $2,300 in cash and merchandise, according to police, and charged with B&E, grand larceny, and possession of marijuana.

Most infected: Impetigo strikes 14 Western Albemarle athletes, including 13 varsity football players. Sharon Fitzgerald has the story in the Progress.

Longest child molestation sentence: Eric Thompson Olsen, 56, is sentenced to 60 years for three counts of aggravated sexual battery of a seven-year-old girl, and must serve nine and a half years, according to the DP.

Biggest evacuation: High carbon monoxide levels empty the Frank Ix building around 6:30pm October 4. Firefighters believe that a propane-fueled forklift operating in the building was the source.

Biggest Civil War relic recovery: The FBI finds a stolen 14th Louisiana Infantry Regiment Confederate battle flag that had been missing since the 1980s when a volunteer at the Confederate Memorial Hall in New Orleans is believed to have swiped it. Fredericksburg agents discover a collector who purchased the purloined flag in 2004 and who voluntarily returned the flag, according to a release.

Newest state historical markers: Albemarle gets one that recognizes the 4,000 Hessian and British troops captured and held at the Barracks, which will go on Garth Road, and one to commemorate Advance Mills out on Earlysville Road.

Latest death knell for print media: Mary Baldwin College drops the hard copy of its monthly Campus Comments, which had a circulation of 200, in favor of an online-only version, according to the Staunton News Leader.

Worst Mary Baldwin bust: Twenty-year-old student Adrian Holmes of Palmyra faces felony charges for possession of Adderall and entering a car, the News Leader reports. Police allege Holmes got in a 2001 Chevrolet Tracker the night of October 7, had a smoke, and left a wallet with identification and Adderall, which were discovered by the car's 66-year-old owner the next day.

Best time to register to vote: Now, before the October 17 deadline for this year's November 8 election.

Best get: Earthquake epicenter Mineral wins a contest with the prize a free concert by country music superstar Alan Jackson.

Second best get: Former U.S. Senator Chuck Robb and wife Lynda will sail on UVA's spring Semester at Sea from Capetown, South Africa, to Shanghai, WINA reports.

Best air guitar: Palmyra resident John Marc Mayhew, 32, is knocked out with a guitar when he allegedly tries to enter a house in Manassas, according to WINA. Mayhew is charged with attempted break-in and spitting on a police officer in the hospital.
