Oliver Stone, Larry Flynt headline Film Fest

A month before the theaters darken for the 24th Virginia Film Festival, director Jody Kielbasa has revealed the special guests so attendees can nab tickets as soon as they go on sale October 7.

And surely one of the sellouts will be legendary filmmaker Oliver Stone, here for a 20th anniversary screening of JFK, which stars Sissy Spacek. She's also on the festival program– for a screening of Badlands, with husband Jack Fisk, whom she met during its filming.

Another Stone connection is Hustler publisher Larry Flynt, who will be here for a discussion after the Stone-produced movie, The People vs. Larry Flynt, brought to you by the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression.

Hot up-and-comer Mia Wasikowska, who starred in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland and Jane Eyre, will be here for her new film, Albert Nobbs, with festival stalwarts Rodrigo Garcia and Julie Lynn.

Other highlights from the more than 100 films in this year's November 3-6 festival are opening night preview of The Descendants with George Clooney– "tremendous Oscar buzz" and this year's Black Swan, according to Kielbasa; and new movies from disturbing-cineastes David Cronenberg (A Dangerous Method) and Lars von Trier (Melancholia).

That actress from The Hangover, Rachael Harris, will be here for her new movie, Natural Selection.

Another tradition at the Festival is classic films, and this year's will be presented in conjunction with Turner Classic Movies and the Library of Congress. Those include Buster Keaton's The General, with musical accompaniment, a free screening of National Velvet, and McCabe and Mrs. Miller. "We're screening fewer of them, but in a highly focused way," says Kielbasa.

The full program will be released October 5, and the Hook's advice to wannabe filmgoers: Don't tarry in getting those tix.

Looks like an exciting festival - another great reason to live in Charlottesville.

Great! Just what Charlottesville needs: A left-winger and an out-and-out communist as an attraction.

A propagandist and a pornographer. Classy.

Reminds me of the good-ol' pretentious days when Virginia Film Festivals had themes like "Wet" and "Bull$hit," but mostly the latter.

Everyone knows what Stone has to discuss- his interviews barely make sense- about as much as his movies.

Larry Flynt? Why would anyone want to hear what he has to say? Everyone has seen what he has to say.........his contribution to the world has been the pornification of our children and the creation of a "prostitot" generation.

Much ado about pretty much has been stuff. Lets go picket the banks, sounds like more fun to me.

thanks for mentioning the local film makers
