Representing the USA are: Lauren Perdue and Matt McLean, swimming; Paige Selenski and Michelle Vittese, field hockey; Becky Saurbrunn, soccer, and Will Coleman, equestrian. Somdev Devvarman competes for India in tennis; Katya Bachrouche swims for Lebanon; David Karasek and Yannick Kaeser swim for Switzerland, Inge Janssen is on the Netherlands women's rowing team; and Lori Lindsay, and Scot Robison are USA alternates in soccer and the 400 freestyle relay, respectively.

Oddest grand larceny charge: UVA professor Glen L. Bull with the Curry School is charged July 19 after a handbag is stolen around 10 pm July 18 from a building in the 400 block of East Main Street, according to the DP.

Latest source of college financial aid: Food stamps, reports WINA. The Virginia Department of Social Services says the program's expenditures by college students grew from $447,000 in January 2007 to almost $3 million by January of this year.

Worst crash: A motorcycle and Dodge Neon collision in Nelson County at the intersection of routes 151 and 840 leaves bike passenger Rina I. Beaulieu, 75, of North Smithfield, Rhode Island, dead, and her husband, Alphonse R. Beaulieu, 76, being treated for life-threatening injuries, according to a release. The driver of the Neon, a 17-year-old male from West Virginia, allegedly blew through a stop sign and struck the Beaulieus, say Virginia State Police. Charges are pending.

 

Latest in ex-teacher/former cop child-porn case: Charles Farrell Long waives his right to a preliminary hearing July 23, and the charges go to the grand jury, according to Bryan McKenzie in the Progress. The former Burnley-Moran fourth grade teacher is charged with two counts each of possession and production of child pornography.

Latest lawsuit against Western State: The family of Cesar Chumil, 59, who spent 15 years in seclusion at the Staunton psychiatric hospital, claims he was unconstitutionally segregated and denied medical care before he died from colon cancer in 2009, the News Leader reports. Records obtained by the AP show that Chumil, who was born in Guatemala, averaged 300 assaults against staff and another 100 against patients over each of the next seven years while he was housed with other residents.

Latest approval for a popular grocer: The Albermarle Architectural Review Board has okayed the plans for the Fresh Market in Albemarle Square, reports Charlottesville Tomorrow.

Best news for U.S. 29 north congestion: The $13.8-million Hillsdale Drive Extended, which is supposed to relieve traffic on Seminole Trail, gets fully funded by the Commonwealth Transportation Board, part of the deal for Albemarle Supes okaying the controversial U.S. 29 Western Bypass. Worst rabid beaver attack: Two sisters, 11 and eight years old, are attacked July 15 while swimming at Lake Anna in Louisa. According to the Free Lance-Star, someone shot the beaver, which tested positive for rabies, and the girls are receiving treatment. The Virginia Department of Health says it's the fourth time in the past decade a beaver turned up with rabies.

Worst giant snake incident: What may have been a python seen squeezing an opossum to death behind the Boathouse Grill gets stabbed by a restaurant employee before the serpent slithers off last weekend. NBC29 reports that the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries says it was probably an escaped or released pet.

No, Paterno won more games than Al Groh and the world of football officialdom is just playing the game of saying it ain't so even though it's still as so as it ever was.

Joe knew and did nothing ... the question is: Why?

Pretty sad for an old couple to get juked that way by some wretched inattentive 17 year old. Until there are real consequences to negligent homicide people are going to keep driving like they're the only ones on the road and expect if anything happens to another driver the worst will be a temporary rise in their insurance premiums. After all: "It was an accident"... with the implication contained in the word that it simply couldn't be helped. It's an accident when a tree limb falls on you and knocks your brains out. These other things are not accidents...

how about a followup on the dead woman found on O hill over a month ago?
