Ryan's run: Republicans rally at Crutchfield HQ

The last time Republicans drew a top party member here was in 1991, when then-vice president Dan Quayle came to boost GOP support for George Allen.

It's a sign of how closely contested Virginia is that vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan came to the often blue-leaning Charlottesville area October 25 to rally the local troops for the November election.

An estimated 1,500, according to organizers, were shuttled into the headquarters of electronics company Crutchfield near the airport, where founder Bill Crutchfield became the poster boy for business success for the Republican officials on hand for the event.

"Being successful in business– there's nothing wrong with that," said Ryan to a roar of applause.

The Wisconsin congressman, arriving by bus around 6:30pm with his family in tow, cited Crutchfield as one of the small businesses that could see taxes go up to 44.8 percent in January, to loud boos from the crowd.

"We'd be on the road to prosperity with Greece," said Ryan, denouncing the economic policies of President Barack Obama.

Ryan extolled the man he hopes will be his new boss, Mitt Romney, noting Romney's balanced budgets during his term as governor of Massachusetts.

And in a final note, Ryan urged the party faithful to try to sway the undecided: "Help them on November 6."

Lasting far longer than Ryan's under-20-minute speech was the wait for the shuttle buses to ferry the inspired GOPers back to the Kohl's parking lot.

"Closely contested?" Reallyl?

The Obama campaign has stopped polling in Virginia weeks ago.

www http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/polls/261189-pollster-pulls-out-of-f...

If it were contested, they would be polling through election day.

Fact check please - " The Wisconsin congressman ...cited Crutchfield as one of the small businesses that could see taxes go up to 44.8 percent in January "

So if Crutchfield is doing well, shouldn't Obama be credited for that?

Oh yea, I forgot. He's only to blame for anything bad that happens to anyone, anywhere. MY BAD!!!

What a bunch of hypocrites.

All our taxes go up in January when the SS taxes go back up. Neither party is telling folks this.

If Crutchfield is doing well it is most likely in spite of Obama and more likely due to the fact that he is able to deliver a product and services to clients and customers by keeping his business model lean. Some of Crutchfields operations are outside of Charlottesville and in southside Virginia where labor, real estate and local taxes are cheaper.... Is he an SOB for "outsourcing" those jobs? They did after all leave Charlottesville........

It is quite simple.... small and medium busineses that survived this mess are now lean enough that they could ALMOST afford to add an employee or two (or three) but they are reluctant to do so because they have zero confidence in Obama to not hit them with more taxes or protect them from more regulations. They will just keep paying down debt and put off the upgrade or remodeling job until the business climate is more favorable.

Romney can inspire the confidence that Obama has utterly failed to do in nearly four years.

it is not todays tax rates, it is the possibilities of what tomorrow might bring. It is the crazy irresponsible spending that not just obama but those who think like him are acceptable.

Romney is not and has NEVER attacked the "entitled" class, (social security, disabled, infirmed) he has however stood up to the "unentitled" class who THINK they are entitled. (lifetime welfare recipients geting as much as they can in free rent, free food stamps, obamaphone and nexct year obamacare )and have no interest in getting a job or even looking for one. These people will this year as they have for the last 50 years voted democratic. Unfortunately the voting booth is the only thing they make an effort to do that doesn't get them a direct payment of some sort.

I won't be buying anything from Crutchfield. Alot of the policies the last 4 years have helped small businesses but most small business owners will not admit it because they have always been republican and they want to get richer. Bottom line it's all about money and power. It always has been, it always will be.

Stop trying to rewrite history.

"Romney is not and has NEVER attacked the "entitled" class, (social security, disabled, infirmed"

He most certainly did. His 47% is a classic. Tons of SS, Vets, and disabled in that group. Of course, if you are willing to tell such lies, its not hard to believe that you will vote for one too. Like hangs with like.

I find it very hard to consider for voting for Mr. Ryan's plan when they want to expand government oversight over my private rights to my body ( yes I am female, college educated, and self employed). Mr Ryan's party I thought was the party of small government.
I dont hear the R;s or the D's talk about the longest war that America has been involved in (drug war-40 years), about clean air and water that is important for my kids to have. I am concerned that the policies that got us to the brink during the 8 years of GWB might return if Romney uses the same people for his cabinet.;
Its very challenging as an undecided independent voter.

Poor Ponce de Leon....still reciting the same old conservative drivel. Of course, he says, Obama cannot be credited for any success that businesses are having –– corporate profits are at all all-time high, the stock markets are healthy, unemployment is down, taxes are at historic lows –– because, well, they aren’t “confident” yet. Say what?
Yo Ponce, I’ve got some ocean-front property in Nebraska you might be interested in purchasing.

Then Ponce goes on to repeat Mitt Romney’s nonsensical, repugnant, and inaccurate statement about the 47 percent. Yo Ponce, why do you think Romney is still withholding those tax returns? And why does he keep so many accounts off-shore? Does Ponce recall that it was George W. Bush who bailed out the big bankers and hedge-funders who caused the broken economy with $700 billion in unrestricted money? Does Ponce not know that corporate welfare dwarfs social welfare?

Ponce is telling the same set of lies that Romney and Ryan spew.

And Bill Crutchfield just gave many people a reason not to buy anything from him. Ever.

By the way Freelove, Ryan (doesn’t he look a lot like Eddie Munster?) attracted maybe 1500 people. Yesterday in Richmond, Obama brought out 15,000.

@ undecided voter: the mere fact that Romney is surrounding himself with oodles of the "same people" who served George W. Bush is reason enough not to vote for him...Bush did quite enough damage to the country.

C'mon!......Ann says that Mitt's unfit. Listen to the woman!

Dear undecided voter..

I suppose you are OK with Obama sticjing his nose into your private parts to GIVE you FREE birth control at someone elses expense?

Everyone that wants to buy a gun , which is a RIGHT in the constitution needs to have a backgroud check yet if you want to abort a child you say the state has no right to make sure you are informed about what you are contemplating but needs to pay for it with someone elses tax dollars. How PROGRESSIVE of you.

I am for legalized abortions. It is my opinion that it is society who should call out irresponsible skanks out for getting knocked up on the hood of an el camino.

When the women who have "responsible" abortions admit and acknowledge that there are too many irresponsible abortions out there than we will have a shift to the middle. As long as people like Democracycontiue to c;aim that 99.999.999% of abortions were "unavoidable" than we will get nowhere.

You have a good point about the drug war but Obama is offering either.

The "crash" was not caused by George Bush or his cabinet it was caused by americans getting cheap easy credit and buying things and then not paying back the money they spent. George Bush (us government)never defaulted on his bills. If you want to know who gave easy credit it was the community reinvestment act that Democracy likes to deny occurred (sort of like Holocaust deniers) but the facts don't lie.

Listen to Ann! She says Mitt's unfit.

I am a yellow dog Democrat, but threatening not to buy anything from Crutchfield because he supports a different candidate is ridiculous! Crutchfield is a great local business and employs a lot of folks in this area. This is America and we should be free to support any candidate we like without fear of reprisal. If I only bought products from companies whose owners shared my political values, I would be hurting local workers.

Bill Crutchfield is welcome to support any candidate he likes. But his business just made a political statement. I'll never spend a dime again supporting the business.

Bill Crutchfield can support whoever he wants, and I can spend my dollars where I want.

So no more Crutchfield, and no more purchases from the Shell Station over on Preston.

I hear that Crutchfield is adding a line of trans-vaginal probes to their shelves, and thus Bill Crutchfield is a big fan of Romney/Ryan/Allen and of course our own Governor Ultrasound.

Bill,

Obama has always been clear that he has no beefs with the 2nd amendment, so this broken record player you want to keep running is just more knee jerk reaction from you. I am a happy gun owner.

And you need to drop the free thing about contraception, because it was never going to be free. It is going to paid for in the same why I or anyone else ends up picking up part of the tab when you have a heart attack, or a stroke, or a variety of other ailments, possibly due to your own lifestyle choices. I am not saying you are overweight, but I really love hearing all the obese loudmouthed right wingers screeching about not paying for someone else's healthcare, forgetting how much we healthy folks subsidize theirs through higher premiums.

Besides which, birth control pills have many many different uses outside of preventing conception. Regulating a woman's hormones can have a positive impact on her health in a myriad of ways, and yes, it should be covered.

Your obsession and just plain incorrect facts over abortion show you to be a very narrow minded person who for all he attempts to portray otherwise, is not going to be a problem solver.

"Hurt, Reeves, and Bell strike a patriotic stance to "America the Beautiful.""

Except America the Beautiful wasn't sung. That was either during the Pledge of Allegiance or during the national anthem. But seriously... great reporting.

"how honored we are Paul Ryan would come to the people's republic of Charlottesville."

Guess I've bought my last stereo from Field Marshall Bill Crutchfield.

I love how the right wingers are so upset with folks saying 'I won't shop at Crutchfield anymore.' These are the same right wingers who a week ago were refusing to shop at Play it Again Sports because of signs a NEIGHBORING business put up.....Let's all pause to think on that for a second......

Too bad none of the people who are complaining about the event DID
NOT attend. I went early and did wait to return to our car by shuttle. At 82 I was not the only person who felt GOOD about the event.
I was thankful to see families there. Children will be effected and they need to know why their parents want to see a CHANGE from what has been going on in our country.
Bring back the constitution!

Glad you had fun, Martha. And I don't think anybody here is complaining about the event itself. Just the substance of what was said. And perhaps criticism of Bill Crutchfield's willingness to alienate his employees and customers - which, of course, he has every right to do.

The Constitution is just fine, by the way. The next time you get a chance though, you might want to ask your boy, Ryan where the Constitution gives him the right to impose his narrow morality on the rest of us.

I also attended the event and enjoyed it. It was nice to see all the kids (including the Ryan kids who high-fived me). It was also a good reminder that whiny liberals have 0-1 kids and we religious conservatives have 3-5. Gives me hope for the future.
Also, you have to give Bill Crutchfield (and the Shell station owner) credit for putting principles over their profits. Crutchfield is a national business and won't get hurt much if at all, but that guy with the Shell station must be losing thousands a day in business. But he probably figures that's not as bad as he'll be hurting if Obama gets re-elected!
It takes a lot of courage to be Republican in this nest of commies.

Martha thank you for participating. I hope you live long enough to go out with a voucher and shop for health care; clearly you're still vigorous enough to get out there and bargain with the insurance companies. And for putting in the ALL CAPS for emphasis; it's so hard to know which words really matter when people fail to do that.

I too look forward to seeing the Constitution come back. Where did Cheney put it anyway?

@Martha: "Bring back the constitution!"

What does that mean?

@meanwhile wrote "So if Crutchfield is doing well, shouldn't Obama be credited for that?"

Crutchfield was doing well long before Obama came on the scene, so no, Obama can't take the credit for the company's success. Many business owners have been offended by Obama's statements that they didn't build their businesses, the government built them. Factcheck: People have been innovative and creative in developing products and services for commercial purposes since the caveman invented the wheel. They didn't need government to do it, and usually it is government that stands in the way of businesses becoming more successful. Look at the City's new plan to limit use of tents by the businesses on the Mall if you want an example. City Council had no problem allowing tents in Lee Park last spring for more than 5 days, yet a restaurant owner can't put up a shelter to extend outdoor dining.
And I am personally offended and shocked at Obama's statement that even our children know "the other guy is a bu--ll--itter". It is one thing for a politician to disagree with his opponent's viewpoints and record, but it is quite another step to start name calling with offensive language. I don't allow my children to use a word such as that, and I would expect an elected official to set a good example for all the children of this country by not resorting to namecalling and foul language. How long would I last as a healthcare professional if I called a coworker a name such as that? It is unprofessional, disrespectful, and unbefitting a president. If for no other reason, he should be fired if he can't rein in his anger any better than that.

@Mark: The high five thing...that came from Negro culture; be true to your ra..I mean party and avoid that. Republicans should come up with their own thing like maybe pointing to the nearest set of ovaries you can find and saying "Who de white male?"

@Mark: The high five thing...that came from Negro culture; be true to your ra..I mean party and avoid that. Republicans should come up with their own thing like maybe pointing to the nearest set of ovaries you can find and saying "Who is the white male?"

Dolemite, I feel lucky that my vote counts as much as yours. Your are clearly the superior intellect :)

MArk,

Yes, conservatvies have more children that they get tax breaks for, while the liberals pick up the slack. Isn't it nice to know you are one of the 47% Romney was referencing? You know, those people who expect hand outs and don't have much of a federal income liability? Those liberals without kids pay more taxes than you do, and are covering you and handing you lots of welafe.

But just as only Nixon can go to China, only Republicans can be welfare recipients, from bank of America right on down to poor whites in trailer parks. Everyone else is supposed to pick up the tab.

And it's generally liberals doing it.

Maybe one day we'll all be lucky and the liberals will all disappear so that you can see how little your conservative children will have, while they work for the man in the big house on the hill, and they will be pleased to just be the housekeeper or butler. No worry about getting an elite college education then, huh?

I don't see what any of this has to do with UVA. Can we please stay focused here?

I see white people

"Many business owners have been offended by Obama's statements that they didn't build their businesses, the government built them. Blah blah blah..."

The only way a small business owner could be offended by the president’s ACTUAL comments (which you and your ilk routinely misrepresent) would be if he/she didn’t understand them. In the case of Bill Crutchfield, his mail order stereo business would have been IMPOSSIBLE without the Federal Postal Service and without a government built-and-maintained transportation system. Pointing out that Mr. Crutchfield has benefited a great deal more than most from those two government services is neither offensive nor dishonest.

Mark: you are woefully ignorant about demographic trends. White 2 parent families (religious or not) are becoming much less of the electorate. Trend line is for minorities to become a much bigger part of hthe electorate. And guess who they vote for?

And...Troof be told...there's probably a lot of car stereo that was purchased by entitlement recipients...LOL. The welfare/food stamp participation is probably higher than 47% among those who outfit cars with large talking drums. (Being Liberal doesn't make that any more palatable than the much more significant corporate welfare.) So Bill C, or Crutch-Dawg if you will, give props where due.

Responsible Christians White folks just buy one TV for Fox News and spend the rest of the time making new Christian Soldiers.

Don't worry, the elections will be postponed or recalled due to the aftermath of the next atmospherically-modified hurricane which, like all hurricanes, could be "knocked out" for a couple million dollars but is instead magnified and steered towards the coast. Set to hit right on time for election day the largest storm in a hundred years. Of course you can always vote early like Obama wants you to (because early voting is much easier to fix with electronic voting machines)

Somebody, the Truth is out there. I'm thinking you must be telling the truth because you're definitely out there.

Hey old timer... how does the rich being all greedy republicans who pay 60% of the taxes in this country reconcile with your ridciulus statement that the liberals are subsidizing the republicans..?

The red state blue state does noit wash because it is STILL the minority of republicans in the red states that pay the bulk of the taxes. Remeber.. they are the ones who control the wealth....

Caseonia, My reference to guns had nothing to do with Obama, it had to do with civic responsibility and if they needed me to watch a video of the operation before i had a vasectomy I would watch it. There are too many abortions in this country and your point of view does nothing but make it worse. It is not unreasonable to assume that if abortions were not treated like nothing without any judgment whatsover than just perhaps some women would be a little more careful which tow truck driver they picked up outside the bowling alley.

As far as Birth control pills being paid for.... my opinion is that they should have the same copay as a cancer drug. and that if an employer has a religious objection that they, vasectomies and condoms should all be able to be excluded. There is no law that an employee HAS to have their insurance with their employer.

The birth control pill issue was simply fabricated to get Obama the feminist female vote.... You know the ones with the point of view that congress needs to stay out of thier vaginas and choices but don't forget to pay the bill for whatever choice they decide.

TheAlex Jones interview with Ben Livingston is out there too. As are the weather modification treaties.

Bill,

"Hey old timer... how does the rich being all greedy republicans who pay 60% of the taxes in this country reconcile with your ridciulus statement that the liberals are subsidizing the republicans..?"

Because the majority of the 47% live in those red states, not the blue states. Would they be blue if they were all rgreedy rich Republicans?

Besides,I never said all the rich are greedy Republicans. A number of Democrats are very wealthy, and seem willing to step up to the plate tax wise, though they are in the minority. Tons of upper class liberals though, who do happen to be in that 20% that pays pretty much all of the taxes.

Like it or not, the red states continue to be poorer, with larger populations of of Romney's 47%, than the blue states. Hmmm, ultra religious, lots of babies, poor education, low income...Republican. Secular, few babies, education, higher income...Democrat. What, you think there is no correlation??

I think it's a mistake for a business person to align themselves with either party. It's bound to piss off a significant portion of their customer base. I've been a Crutchfield customer for around 30 years. No more. Bye bye!

I love the Crutchield business! Even though I've moved over 500 miles away from CVL, I still buy from them. If someone is offended by him making his political views known and they choose to shop elsewhere, that's certainly their right. I used to avoid movies with actors who made obnoxious left wing comments, but I started running out of movies to go to.

I've noticed a lot of comments about the "47%" comment from Romney. Are you equally offended by Obama's comment from the 2008 election where he referenced those "bitter people who cling to guns and religion"? Something tells me there some overlap in those two groups. Anybody's intellect offended by Obama telling the American people and the world that the attacks in Libya were fueled by the internet video? He's either a total ignoramus or a total liar..........neither of which is good.

Old Timer you are at least partially correct..

The WORKING poor live in red states...

The lazy NON working poor live in the blue states in the inner cities with all the free stuff that traps them there provided by bleeding hearts who have a done a fabulous job of telling them they are incapable of helping themselves and that they are victims of evil white men who think they might actually be capable of working if they would only try.

Once again... in the "blue" states the rich are overwhelmingly conservative... the rich pay the bulk of the tax base and live in the blue states because that is where there is money to be made.
You also notice that the blue states are the ones with the highest taxes, the highest paid union government workers and the most broke treasuries....
Liberals are very happy to give away their grandchildrens money to union trash collecters who will retire on 65k a year plus benefits and still leave tyour trash can unemptied if you don't leave a big enough tip on Christmas.

girlygirl said: "threatening not to buy anything from Crutchfield because he supports a different candidate is ridiculous!"

I disagree. If a person uses their money to attempt to bring about changes that I find repugnant, the only feeble leverage I have is to vote with my money and deprive him of using MY dollars for the purpose. I don't want to harm his workers, but the fact is the Republican platform that Bill Crutchfield supports will also harm his workers. I'm not going to help him do that, and neither should you.

@Old Timer...So, those wealthy liberals "step up to the plate tax-wise?"
1. Hollywood movie producers (mostly liberal) who shoot films in places like Vancouver so they do not have to pay higher (union) salaries to workers, thus depriving the USA of tax revenue so they can maximize profit.
2. John Kerry purchasing a million-dollar yacht in a neighboring state to avoid the higher Massachusetts taxes.
3. Obama--who should be in the 28% tax bracket--paying about 20% rate of income tax in 2011. Why didn't he just write a check to the treasury or not take deductions. After all, the rich do need to pay their fair share.
It goes on and on. Please don't continue this silly postulate that rich liberals pay tons in taxes while rich Republicans do not.

R.I.P.: Vic Morrow--killed in the middle of the night in the employ of a rich liberal movie director who was illegally employing kids after hours (who also died alongside Morrow).

Sooo.... you will never spend money at a business run by a republican? Bet you cannot last a week.

If you want to hear where your money's going crank up the Polks to ten

"Please don't continue this silly postulate that rich liberals pay tons in taxes while rich Republicans do not. "

I don't think was what was said Liberalace. What was said is that rich Democrats don't mind writing laws that will cost them more in taxes. Vancouver cheaper than the US due to Unions? Mmmm...more like cheaper because health insurance is cheaper. But is isn't exactly cheap i Vancouver, so I don't know what you are talking about. A lot of films shoot in Virginia still pay Unions rates even though they don't have to, and including to non-union employees.

If by rich Democrats you mean Warren Buffett (and those he bought with campaign donations) keep in mind that he will benefit more from a tax increase on millionaires even if it raises his taxes because in addition to having most of his money in tax free foundations, Swiss gold, and foreign companies, the revenue will go to bailing out his failed investments and boosting his more recent ones. Instead of paying off every single mortgage in the country (which the bailout could have done). You don't get to be a billionaire by being honest with people.

"Hook Reader Since 2002"@get your facts straight.Bill Crutchfield does not live in Farmington. He lives on Northfields Drive.Common knowledge.

Moolah, I agree that people will be pissed off, but as a business owner, I know that the world is created of people who have a lot of differing ideas about EVERY thing, including politics and governance, and that somewhere in the middle of it all, some great creative ideas will come out that will propel our country into some new and great future. So I don't hate my conservative friends. I listen to them and debate them and try to make life better. I know for a fact that Bill was one of the first people in town who actually gave his employees bonuses for achieving health goals like losing weight or qutting smoking. He created a health win-win for his business and his employees. I respect that. You are free to do as you wish but i support diversity of thought and opinion, as long as we all respect each other.

As to those defending the "you did not do it by yourself," re roads and post office etc I would have to suggest that they look no further than FLuvanna as to just how much development and progress can be made by a government without business taxes. Really, you think the government built the roads" They contracted out the roads and had it built with tax money, a very different thing. As to the post office, well...look no further for proof of how government management can bankrupt a monopoly.

The fact remains that you will find very few successful businesses that are not owned by a right leaning individual.

@girlygirl I respect Crutchfield's private decisions, and of course he's free to make public ones with a company he owns. For me, using a company as a platform for a political party crosses over a line though. He's allowed to do that with his company but it means I won't ever be a customer again, which is also a prerogative. There were a lot of people who stopped buying Coors beer for similar reasons. How does an employee of his who supports Obama feel --do they feel free to park at work with an Obama sticker or is there subtle intimidation and pressure to conform?

But having said that, I have to acknowledge the similar reactions to Springsteen that people had here, and ask why the basically municipal pavilion was used for a partisan rally. That doesn't seem quite cricket either.

@ dolomite. Interesting. I never thought about the Boss. But I'm fine with that too. I own a successful business but value civil rights far more than money, thus I am a Democrat. I can tell you that I have been called unbelievable names, have had my business threatened, and have actually been spit on for standing up for my beliefs, but I still do it because ultimately our freedom of expression is worth everything. I bet Bill feels the same way But I still hate to see it happening. You did make some salient points and I enjoyed our discussion. Far too little of that these days.

I think the use of a municipal or public platform is the totally appropriate location for a political rally, and if Ryan and Romney want to use it, they should have access as well. They might have to wait in line if it's already booked, but that's simple courtesy. For all we know, the DNC paid for the use of the pavillion, and the GOP could do the same. The tickets were free to all citizens regardless of political affiliation.

This is far better than the private party nonsense which is used more often than not to deny access to citizens from their reps, or provide limited access to candidates who wish to take on a leadership role representing the municipality. While I doubt any one would have been barred from seeing Ryan at Crutchfields, the issue of private property makes it a lot harder to consider the 1st Amendment right you have.

As a small business owner employing 10 people in charlottesville I can only speak for myself. The main reason for not hiring new personal is the simple fact that individuals and business spend less today than they did 6 years ago. It really does not matter much to me who is in the white house anymore it's really the rest of the fat cat politicians that are sucking the life out of all of us. Not all but most are self serving pigs who have eaten from the tax payer troff for years. Our only chance to to right side our Great country will be term limits, no lobbyist, and no special interest monies, and no pension for life for any goverment employee save like the rest of us have to. Wait and see no matter who is elected the majority of us will pay more in taxes and I don't just mean income tax our states and localities will want more and probably sooner than later.

OLD TIMER- come on......you know it is more like 49% that he doesn't care about..... and it is 51% that President Obama doesn't care about........ do the math

Well skipd, PT Barnum said no one ever went broke ever underestimating the American public, and Romney has apparently learned that lesson. He has banked off of sending jobs to China, but apparently plenty of white working class men are more worried about controlling a woman's body than the security of their job. So they will vote for Romney while he laughs to the banks.

However, Obama will win, even if it will be a split decision. They will come to understand the taste of 2000, and how a culturally freaky and biased culture predominantly in the South will finally be isolated as they should be. I say that as a hard core Southerner too. It's time to move into the 21st century.

I personally will not patronize Crutchfield's not because of this but because of substandard service I received there when I was trying to keep my money local. The result was going to a national store, Mr. Crutchfield and too bad, your company lost what could have been a loyal customer.

Personally, I think no business, newspaper or other should endorse any candidate - it leads to corruption for example: http://thinkprogress.org/election/2012/10/17/1037881/leaked-audio-romney...

We should try to keep as much out of the election process as possible. I also do not believe in corporate donations to candidates - just individual donations period. It is appalling how much all candidates spend on elections. The good thing is newspapers, television stations, the US Postal service are all making money through it all but it is insane how much money is spent.

For all those complaining about birth control pills covered by insurance or by the Affordable Care Act - they are for more than birth control. They are prescribed to regulate hormones, control acne, regulate menstruation and if Viagra is covered, why not birth control pills?!! Oh, that's right it is the Republican, grey haired over 60 crowd that needs Viagra! Of course it is covered!

Prior to the Affordable Care Act, nothing was guaranteed to be covered by health plans out there, it was either you pay for it or you hoped your employer would choose a plan that met many coverages. And preventative care out there helps to insure healthy people! What a freaking concept! If people are healthy - they will need less care in the long run! Wow! I'm sure many of you short-sighted folks don't see this. This area is full of you.

"Let's build a shopping mall!" "Oh, we need parking for that!" and "Ooops, the road needs to be widened." (SMH here because that has been a very long pattern here with not just Charlottesville or Albemarle but many of those surrounding us too.)

Pregnancy is not a malady, menstration is not a malady, birth control is not a health care service and neither is abortion. Period.

Is making the sign of the cross with your arms and microphone the latest Masonic handsign or is he just trying to ward off his running mate?

Somebody, thank you for showing that you are one of the ignorant angry white males knuckle draggers threatened by women. Menstruation might not be a malady, but the flux of hormones due to menstruation can and does cause all kinds of maladies. Some with terrible consequences. Yes, cancer, gastroparesis, osteoperosis, and a slew of other conditions/diseases are very real maladies and very real healthcare costs. Many of them high dollar ones. Birth control, a product that regulates female hormones, can and does have a positive impact on either regulating, or even minimizing the possibility these conditions occur.

Of course they don't matter to you, and it's not lost that a bunch of men never whispered about Viagra because men must have their morning wick or something is wrong with them. That, naturally, is a health condition that must be paid for.

I'm all in favor of banning viagra

As someone who is not a "bleeding heart liberal", but somewhat of a "social democrat" in the European model, I find the self made man meme rather offensive and also the "Cracker Christian" coupling of ascribing one's success as a self made man to being "blessed" by God.
There are a number of local businessmen so beloved by God that they don't need and will never receive my business....

Somebody,

"I'm all in favor of banning viagra. "

Glad to hear it. So why don't you get your like thinkers to be sure they mention that every time they take a ht on women's reproductive related treatments and be sure and petition congress about it as well with your church.

Re viagra..... I doubt seriously if men would whine if viagra was not covered.... odds are overwhelming that it is just seen as a nesssasry expense.... kind of like the lobster and the listening....

@ democracy. I agree with you that Paul Ryan has a "strong" widows peak. However, during an important federal election year, if you are fixated on mocking the looks of a candidate, you probably don't have a lot of ammo nor the intellectual bandwith to consider substance over surface. This isn't a beauty pageant, but a presidential election.

Considering the demographic in Charlottesville and Albemarle, and the fact that Paul Ryan was probably not someone you were familiar with 4 months ago, I find it noteable that he would attract 1500 people. I would expect an incumbent president to draw large crowds, too. But the only numbers that count are those after the polls close a week from this evening.

PDL,

" I doubt seriously if men would whine if viagra was not covered.... odds are overwhelming that it is just seen as a nesssasry expense.... "

Oh, if that were so it wouldn;t be pushed as hard as it is. But all you have really demonstrated is why women continue to be up and arms about the inherent sexism in so many condition related to healthcare. It is especially egrgious seeing as theya re the ones who make the continuation of our species possible.

How not surprising that to a bunch of male lawmakers and heads of religious organizations, that male things might be considered necessary and female ones not.

But we always knew you were a nuckle dragger yourself. That seems to be all the GOP is made up of these days.

Freelove,

I imagine Democracy knew full well who Ryan was more than 4 months ago, as did most of us Libertarians. Paul Ryan is not a Libertarian. We don't like him.
