The week in review

Worst exercise of Second Amendment rights: A man walks into Kroger on Emmet Street with a loaded AR-15 semi-automatic rifle January 27.

Worst idea for a hoax: University of Virginia at Wise student Bryant Alexander Hairston, 20, of Martinsville, is charged with knowingly making a false statement after calling 911 January 23 to report an armed man wearing a face mask on the campus.

Worst place to bring an airsoft gun: A nine-year-old Burnley-Moran student hits another in the head when he fires it inside a city school bus January 22.

Most irresponsible shooters: A couple of numbnuts engage in afternoon gunfire January 22 on West Street between 10th and 11th streets, the Progress reports. The shots go into two homes, and police recover at least nine bullet casings, but no one is hurt.

Second most irresponsible alleged shooter: Curtis Glover, III, 26, turns himself in for a January 22 shooting on Wilton Farm Road, according to the DP. Glover is charged with attempted malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The round went into a parked car and no one was injured.

Latest with alleged hunting dog shooter: Michael Perry Mullins, 46, goes to the grand jury on a felony larceny charge. Samantha Koon reports in the Progress that police found the missing dog in a black plastic bag in the back of Mullins' truck.

Latest George Huguely legal efforts: The former UVA lacrosse player convicted last February of murdering his former girlfriend, Yeardley Love, and sentenced to 23 years in prison has filed a petition asking the Court of Appeals to grant a new trial, according to the Progress. Huguely's new lawyers, Paul Clement of Washington and Craig Cooley of Richmond, say Huguely was denied his right to counsel when his trial attorney, Rhonda Quagliana, was absent because of the stomach flu, and the petition cites procedural errors.

Latest allegations against Christopher Dumler: A second woman comes forward and tells police the 27-year-old Scottsville supervisor repeatedly sexually assaulted her between September and December 2006, according to Rachel Ryan at the Newsplex. No charges have been filed; Dumler currently faces one charge of forcible sodomy, with a preliminary hearing scheduled January 31.

Most guilty pleas: James Henry Moore, 31, admits January 23 to strangling, abducting, assaulting, and obstructing a 911 call his girlfriend made while trying to escape him in August on Old Lynchburg Road, according to the DP. He'll be sentenced April 9.

Longest child porn sentence: Anthony C. Jeffries of Orange is sentenced January 28 to 168 months in prison on child porn possession and distribution charges coming from three federal court districts.

Longest B&E sentence: Wendell Burton, 22, gets four years in prison January 22 for a series of break-ins in the Canterbury Hills subdivision last January, the Progress reports, and is ordered to pay $3,000 in restitution along with his co-defendants.

Biggest trial: The case of former Culpeper police officer Daniel Harmon-Wright, who shot unarmed Patricia Cook, 54, in a church parking lot, goes to the jury January 28. A verdict had not been reached at press time.

Biggest turnover on City Council: Former mayor Dave Norris says he will not seek a third term in November.

First citizen patriot award: WINA's Rob Schilling honors Dr. Charles Battig for his efforts "to dispel 'global warming' and 'climate change' myths, as presented by various self-serving 'environmentalist' entities," according to a release.

Finally a chairman: Duane Snow is named head of the Metropolitan Planning Organization January 23 after being denied chairmanship of Board of Supervisors a few weeks ago when he refused to give up his seat on the MPO.

Latest indicator that print media is gasping: The Cavalier Daily, one of the nation's oldest college newspapers, will go from a four-day-a-week newspaper to an online publication with a twice-a-week print newsmagazine starting in August.

So Rob Schilling continues down the path of "see your crazy and raise you". Dr.Charles Battig is to climate science what William Shockley was to racial eugenics. It's so nice that there are enough whacky old white guys in Charlottesville willing to listen to this stuff that WINA can have its very own alternate universe radio show.

I agree Angel eyes, Rob is a master of dumb is dumber, blah,blah... evil liberals, nonsense, stupidity, fear mongering, thumper drivel, i am a real American and you are not, i know better than you, another Republican for corporate power, pollution and foolishness. If only Charlottesville was more like Oklahoma, but with even fewer liberals and more conspiracies. Stupid is a stupid does.

Rob Shilling... isn't that the guy who exposed City Hall handing contracts to just whomever they pleased, regardless of the submitted bids? If I recall correctly, one employee lost his job over it. Probably should have been more. Maybe he isn't as dumb as you all think?

@Angel Eyes: What's with the race-based reference of "old white guys"? Shouldn't that be beneath you?

Obviously, you haven't listened to Dr. Battig continually and effectively dispute the wealth redistributors...eh, global warming fanatics. He blinds you with SCIENCE -- you know, the pesky, proven facts that deflate their claims and expose the hokum.

Funny - Dr. Battig got hot-air expert David Toscano to agree to putting on a local public global warming/climate change debate out of the General Assembly session time -- 2 YEARS AGO. Mr. Toscano repeatedly blows off the challenge, when push comes to shove.

As for Rob Schilling, he exposes Progressive hypocrisy on a daily basis. No wonder you and the Prius-driving, hummus-munching, Obama-loving crowd in C'VILLE hate him.

Rock on, Rob -- and MORE BATTIG!!

Amanda;
Posting while drunk just leads to "word salad".

@ Angel Eyes: That's the best you've got? Pfft. Time for you to move along.
