Get Out! events, shows, things to do

What would an ocean be without a monster lurking in the dark? It would be like sleep without dreams.”
Werner Herzog

Otherness to the scene

Monsters invade March's First Friday art lineup at the brand new Telegraph gallery on the Downtown Mall. Located between O’Suzannah and The CVille Smoke Shop on Fourth Street, Telegraph debuts with "Monstrous," a show featuring various imagined creatures in pop art-style screen prints, a theme that reflects the philosophies of the gallery owners.

"Deviation or otherness is at the heart of what it is to be a

monster," says gallery co-owner David Murray, "and I think most people identify with that. It's one of the great themes of art and literature."

Appropriately, Murray and his soon-to-be wife and business partner, Kate deNeveu, say that Telegraph is a marriage of their strengths. He's been an artist and a screen printer for years, while her background is in art history, business, printing, and sales. The couple met while going to UVA, and had always planned to move back here when they decided to settle down.

Clearly, though, they don't plan on quietly settling into the background.

"Charlottesville already has a vibrant and wonderful art community," says Murray, "we're here to add otherness to the scene."

Murray says the 'telegraph' became their name and theme because it was "a revolutionary form of affordable communication.

"We're working with artists from all over the world to produce new, affordable screen printed posters each month as part of First Fridays," he says.

In addition, design-focused objets d'art, magazines, and independent publications will also be for sale in the gallery.

"We decided to open with 'Monstrous' because we're really proud of the things that set us apart," says Murray.

OPENING ACTS

Robert Plant and Jimmy Page Ooh, it makes me wonder...
On the heels of the "Who's Bad" Michael Jackson tribute show, the Jefferson serves up a "Hammer of the Gods" experience not to be missed: the Led Zeppelin tribute band Zoso.

Named for the symbol that appeared on the band's untitled 1971 album, and which Jimmy Page often had sewn into his clothes, Zoso has been playing live since 1999. According to the Los Angeles Times they are "head and shoulders above all other Zeppelin tributes." The Chicago Sun-Times has also called them the "closest to the original of any tribute."

Each member of Zoso was chosen to mirror both the appearance and playing styles of Zeppelin's band members; Robert Plant (pictured), Jimmy Page (pictured), John Bonham, and John Paul Jones, and they use vintage instruments of the time, the original stage craft, and a visual experience that'll make you think you're re-living the wild 1970s.

If you were lucky enough to see Zeppelin live, obviously nothing will compare, but if you didn't, or if you'd like to rekindle the memory, you might want to think about going to see what the St. Petersburg Times has called "the most exacting of the Zeppelin tribute bands in existence."
March 2, Jefferson Theater, 8:30pm, $15-$17

Read a big book
March kicks off the Big Read, the NEA program designed to reinvigorate the nation's interest in real literature, and thanks to a generous grant from the NEA, our own Jefferson-Madison Regional Library is poised to get all of Central Virginia reading the same book: author Amy Tan's classic, The Joy Luck Club.

Published in 1989 by an unknown, first-time writer, the book was originally meant to be a collection of short stories, but the Chinese mother-daughter saga set in San Francisco's Chinatown eventually became an international best-selling novel, composed of sixteen stories about four women who form a club to play mahjong, a sort of Chinese version of rummy, and their daughters. Through the lens of their involvement in the club, readers are introduced to the stories the women share about their lives.

In addition to encouraging folks to read the novel, JMRL will also be organizing discussions about the book, Chinese culture, and the immigrant experience all through the month. You can visit the Library's Big Read website at jmrl.org/bigread.htm or call 434-979-7151 to find out about upcoming events.

Beginning in the month of March.
