Fake taxi: UVA victim offers assault details

The UVA student who reported being assaulted after getting into what she thought was a taxi at around 2:30am on Sunday, February 17 has met with police and provided more details about her alleged attacker, whom she describes as a "tall and chubby" middle-aged male of Indian descent who spoke in broken English. According to a release from UVA Police, the student entered the vehicle, a dark colored four-door sedan that was not marked as a taxi, near 513 Rugby Road, and the driver continued past her Alderman Road residence to an area near Kellogg House, where she kicked him and escaped the vehicle after he attempted to assault her.

Anyone with information about the incident should call 434-924-7166, email , or contact Crimestoppers at 434-977-4000.

Easy Targets

She's racist. An Indian guy driving a sedan, must be a taxi.

Can you say "Harrington"? I have wondered about the possibility of a transient taxi driver being involved. This needs close examination by the authorities, and not just UVa police!

I'm glad she talked to police, because it's true he'll just try the same game on another girl. At least the police know what's going on, which is important. The next time he does something similar, they'll have a better idea of who they're looking for.

As far as the Harrington case, I doubt he's involved. The main suspect is black, and I happened to have been assaulted (non-sexual, just hit me hard, apparently trying to knock me over) by a similar-looking man on the same night, and long story short he was with three other dark white males, and then there was another older white male who I saw with one of the men from the night of the abduction separately, a few days later. The circumstances in both sightings were incredibly suspicious.

Of course I'd love to see what the other witnesses saw, because I'd like to know whre my piece of the puzzle fits in. But I guess none of us will know the whole story unless they finally take it to trial.

Here's one tidbit -- one of the white accomplices I saw has a loooooong history of predation from out of state and Northern Virginia, and you guessed it -- cops never took him very seriously that I know of. Once again, it appears he'll get away with murder (or at least being an accomplice) in the Harrington case. Apparently the cops only have DNA from the black guy. Just like a serial criminal -- as long as he gets off, who cares how many accomplices go to jail or die for helping him out with his crimes? Black guy is hunted down, white guys get off (although it's possible two of the white guys have been in trouble since, one may even be dead). It's not only giving Virginia's law enforcement the appearance of prejudice, but it leaves men on the streets who are incredibly dangerous.

I've come to the conclusion that Morgan Harrington's death is the culmination of everything that's wrong with our criminal justice system. It was no accident -- these men had histories, and they could have been caught earlier if people had done their best to protect other women from them. That includes numerous law enforcement agencies in various jurisdictions. And the predator I knew changed jurisdictions a lot, as if it was a criminal strategy with him.

They really should beef up the sexual crimes portion of the FBI, or at least give interstate stalking a higher priority than zero. If I told everyone what I've seen of that one predator since the year 2000, possibly even 1993 or 1991, your jaws would drop. Why is this guy still on the streets? I have no idea. It's not like I haven't given the cops and FBI the full license tags of almost every vehicle he and his accomplices have used through the years.

Well, everyone has a right to speak.:
Nothing above from 'Hard Work' is even close to what we believe. But we do encourage you to call FBI and mention Dino, VSP and the Harrington case. Going through the FBI insures you that a VSP person did not loose your info and maybe in the past valuable tips were lost! I hope that you do have credible info on the Harrington case.

But this article is about a totally different woman, not seemed to be related. Just as Hugley murdering Ms. Love had nothing factually to do with the Harrington case.

If it is suggested that UVA and V-Tech is a heaven for abuse, I agree. But I do think UVA is now trying. What is in the past is in the past. UVA should look at digital cameras and place them in various places. This doesn't infringe on anyone's rights.

Last year in Hollywood we caught the sick arsonist by using the digital images. They released the images and within 24 hours he was captured. It does not infringe on anyone's rights. His capture was before he had the chance to kill hundreds in a high rise fire. My friends and neighbors were spared our lives.

Video data is very cheap now, it can be stored for 100's of years. A great tool and it is inexpensive. UVA could even offer classes in the time lapse and facial recognition science.

Digital recordings are a gift, not to be abused. There is nothing infringing on one’s rights by having a camera where this victim was solo and the car could easily have been taped.

Wake up. That is not big Brother.
If they see a drug deal go down, well its not the same, they would have to examine what exchanged hands with boots on the ground. But a car, a driver, come on, just step it up.
On a different note if all Virginia Law enforcement stopped the pursuit of citizen’s simple possession and not-for profit collective dispensaries and cannabis use the money saved would be enough to triple if not more the sexual crime enforcement.

UVA look at your endowment, tell me you can't do it? Jefferson did grow cannabis and yes a small portion was for recreational use.

Not a cool thing to say in Virginia but tobacco and alcohol are much more of a gateway drug to hard drugs than Cannabis.

I have never heard of a case in my lifetime when a group or individual got stoned on cannabis and went nuts and rapped a woman! It is just the other way around. Ladies it is like temporary castration. Marijuana does not lead to men acting as they are driving a cab and assaulting women.

UVA: you’ve got a problem..Almost all Colleges do, but take the lead.

If she had listened to the VP she could have shot her shotgun twice and everything would be ok.

CCW always. "She must be racist? Please!!!!!!! Typical lib. Story is about attempted sexual assault and that is what you get from story? You need some help!

M Sutton, video is not stored for 100's of years. It's written over (most places) after a few weeks on the hard drive.

M Sutton, also remember the concert area DID have videos ---a lot of them. Just so happened that all the videos of Morgan Harington disappeared the next day when she was reported missing. Doesn't do you any good to have videos if you let staff erase and alter them at will. Concert promotion company has never answered why every one of their cameras malfunctioned when Morgan came up to it---she did go to each entrance trying to get back in. They, shortly after the event, promoted the manager and transferred him out of C'ville. When people are concerned about accountability, physical evidence has a way of disappearing--even videos.

Cat perhaps they felt that someone would try and pin responsbility for the abduction on them by twisting the video to look like they were negligent. So because juries give away money too easy they play defense. If Juries were more fair this kind of behavior wouldn't happen. As cold as it sounds their first obligation is their own survival and they are under no legal obligation to take a chance on going bankrupt because a murderer used their parking lot to kidnap someone.

The reason they cannot answer the question is because a jury would defy logic and hold them responsible BECAUSE they erased the tapes when they are not even obligated to make them in the first place. There is no law against destroying evidence that could be incriminating to oneself even in a civil suit.

Suppose you were quoting from django unchained and said the "n" word on tape and you knew your enemies would cut ut the snippet and label you a racist. would you not destroy it to protect yourself or would you wait until it was broadcast on newsplex out of context and defend it on page 11 in the progress thursday edition?

As a suggestion to women... if someone offers you a ride ask them if you can take a picture of them and email it to a friend First. That way at least we wil know who to look for.

@ Hard Work

Very interesting post. So many theories going around for the last few years nobody knows who did it. The ones that do won't tell. I know that you aren't going to just come out and say who it is, but a couple of key hints would help. Lets just say that you got my attention. It may confirm something for me.

Hunter, "Hardwork" has posted about this before, beginning at the time the sketch was released. She says she has talked to all the appropriate authorities. My advice is to call the FBI -AGAIN (all three locations for this case)! Ask specifically to speak to the Agent handling it. (See previous posts below):

Comment by - hesajurseyjurk

It's great that the Harringtons are trying to raise awareness about this guy in the DC area, where one of his other attacks happened, but I was assaulted by a man who fit his description on that very night, and his tags were from out of state. Also, I think the sketch is a little dated. If he's the same man who hit me, his facial expressions are more psychotic and he looks older, plus his hair is cut closer to his head all the way around, no more of this "longer on top" stuff from his old 80s hairstyle.
http://www.myfoxdc.com/dpp/news/virginia/parents-and-supporters-rally-fo...
She also says:
GET REAL: .....I had an encounter with a man who may have been her attacker on that very night, and before I even saw or heard him or knew he was there, he slammed into me really hard, so hard that it stung. I didn't report him to police at the time because it could have been an accident and my past experience with police in other cities is that they don't like taking reports even on serious crimes, so reporting things that may have been accidental will never go anywhere. But at least now I understand what happened, and you should all understand that the man doesn't care who you are, he just wants someone to atttack physically. Fortunately for me, I was bigger and heavier than he was, and so I didn't fall over. Rather I got angry and took down some info on him, toying with the idea of calling police anyway. Police now have that information, even though I decided against calling them on that particular night. And why do they have it? Because the Harringtons made the case public, because the police released the sketch -- that's the only reason I knew the old license tag was significant enough to find and report.
The man attacks women about a second after seeing them, he has no idea whether they've been drinking or not and doesn't care. I wasn't drinking at all that night, in fact I'm a middle-aged computer nerd who was enjoying coffee and free wifi when I was attacked, he probably saw me through the large windows. And they say that's what he did to the Fairfax victim too, grabbed her from behind before she saw him and choked her until she passed out. It's like a martial art he practices, immediately disabling his victims. He's just a predator looking for a victim, and although alcohol may play a role in some things, based on REAL experience it's extremely unlikely that the Harrington disappearance had anything to do with alcohol. And everyone can thank the Harringtons and police if he's caught, so that YOUR daughter isn't next!
suspicious of him because he was out on the same night and hit me in a sneaky, deniable way that seems to resemble the immediate attempts at disabling his victims like the Fairfax rapist, and he does look a lot like their sketch. But again, we'll have to wait and see. There's still a chance that the man I saw just happened to be a jerk on the wrong night, and is someone different entirely. I'd say that's a small chance, but you never know.

There is no reason that data cannot be stored for 100' of years.

Try a little reading, I suggest Ray Kurzweil.

The cost of storing data is now cheaper than the efforts to erase it. There is also the fact that data not writing over old data can be magnified with much ease. The images preserved now will be able to be enhanced to even the possibility of the 100 degree.

UVA should be going into these sciences, even if V-tech's name suggest it be the better suitor.

If an event takes place then for 2 years all data can be easily kept. Example: 20 intersections, 4 angles each gives you 80 feeds synchronized. If the person happens to be watching a particular feed that is not an issue. The other 79 feeds are also being recorded.

After 2 years if there is nothing that may be useful for law suites or LE, then compact it and store it. It is not like someone pulls out a VHS tape and stores it on a shelf.

It is the 21 century, data storage, legal cannabis and yes racism will be seen in a light yet seen by many in Virginia.

Funny how they embraced the familia DNA with open arms, but addressing the raciest hatred created by the PR firm is not seen inside your community.

It is so easy to see that Virginia needs to come out of the 19th and 20th century, Very many even the majority are perfectly fine and understand the on the face it seems to represent all. So they are not as vocal as the less educated.

There is no reason that video should not be present if she got into the vehicle where the reports indicate.

Free up law enforcement from spending money and helicopters looking for 1 plant. Look at the cost of using that equipment. Put the money into cameras and boots on the ground. Use undercover police to entice the perverts. Careful of the fruit from the poisonous tree, let DA's teach the officers the right way, no entrapment.

Don't allow wild rumors to work up the raciest into a mob! Don't discouraging other victims to hide and not come forward. AND stop blaming the victims.

@cat February 25th, 2013 | 5:18pm

The video's you refer to have nothing to do with this young person and her being picked up.

What you stated is not accurate. Rader did see many many recordings. You are repeating a release that is not from those named in the lawsuit

I suggested to Dan and he got it. We urged him to file the suite in March. The statement by Gil on CNN, theirs HHN show where Jill clearly sated that the police told her Morgan was dressed provocatively.

This was enough to to let the FBI take the lead and to file many Lawsuits. They were engaged in PR knowing that the majority of their readers hated SUING HUNGRY people. They bowed to the PR and let months go by. Valuable months.

Law enforcement is being represented in this lawsuit and what they know, what recordings they did view and what sources of video will be up to a judge to release that information to the public. That is if the lawsuit is not settled, if it is settled the parties will decide what is released.

To stop the events like what happened to THIS young person cameras and focusing on physical harm by patrolling cops will certainly help.

Digital recordings are here to stay, In Britain they certainly help not only deter crimes but to arrest and to prosecute. Where I live 70 percent of what I do daily is recorded by cameras and is a great source for peace of mind. Using ATM's getting parking stubs, walking past the Israel Temple, approaching the Dolby Theater, Getting on and riding the sub-way, all of it is welcomed by me. If a friend wants to stop into a dispensary and buy a 8th and roll it and smoke it, so what the tapes are not going to lead to any hassles by the police.

I don't smoke anything, but I am not afraid of being associated with it. It is an outdated police practice and is not prosecuted. Bigger fish to fry. Grow it here and you stop a large portion of the border crossings. Focus on the hard drugs that require lab's, not something that God gave us that grows from the ground.

The camera's catch someone throwing out a beer can or whisky bottle, take the tags and have a patrol car pull them over, stop a drunk driving death! Just like Morgan's friends did, they stopped her from driving drunk and killing an innocent person or family.

This young person chose to take public or private transportation and not drive, who knows or cares if she was drinking, but we know one thing she was not behind the wheel and we need to encourage this. But we need to also provide safety.

Encourage UVA victims to offer assault details!

The civil suit still makes no sense to me.It seems wrong to blame jpja for her own decision to leave the arena and grounds.

All those cameras in the UK are not deterring crime, and they have more per capita than anywhere in the world, I believe. But the stats just don't show them having an effect. What would have deterred THIS crime is the student NOT getting into a car with a stranger. Same with Morgan. Don't need cameras for that. Just need common sense (which of course can be eroded by drugs, inebriation unfortunately). Cameras only help after the fact anyway. Morgan would still be dead, this girl still nearly assaulted.

M sutton find me a business that stores it's date from it's video cameras in Charlottesville/Albemarle for more than a year? Maybe a military base, NGIC maybe....it's not happening at this point locally....

@ ?
It's nice to see your showing interest, and I hoped you would read a little about storage from the writer I suggested on the subject.. When was the last time you looked at UVA endowment? The Getty Museum keeps data and never erases the video. They use facial recognition on each and every person that enters and as they walk through. They are trying to see if a group is there to gather info or what is commonly said "case the joint". Banks commonly keep the video data for years. For other business two years is the time suggested by security professionals due to the legal limits of a lawsuit.

You are aware of "flash" drives "The Cloud" and other advances. Look at the new google glasses. Look at the Chrome notebooks. There really is no reason to argue what businesses do, UVA has the funds, it is very cost effective and actually is a price plus.

As far as: Anja Mima February 26th, 2013 | 8:06am
".........Cameras only help after the fact anyway. ..." is the only thing I care to touch upon. The student in THIS article reported a while AFTER the fact. That is my point.

As to Harrington I agree totally with you and even suggest there are even more factors that certainly had influence on her death.

@Anja Mima February 26th, 2013 | 6:20am
The civil suit still makes no sense to me. It seems wrong to blame jpja for her own decision to leave the arena and grounds.”…

Filing a suit is more of a way to get some info, any info going through the discovery phase. I certainly agree with it seeming wrong to blame JPJA, but the filing is going after them only peripherally. BUT Jill's Attorney I hope has relayed that discovery is a two way street. That they have a right to look at every single post on Findmorgan.com.

You ask why, well using Gil's own words can just destroy her whole argument. When someone blames in print the things she has, this claim seems to be just another of dozens of pipe dreams. Morgan wanted to reach the place that she asked potential drivers to give her a ride to.

As to this student, I am sure if there is a link to other cases Ms Stuart will let us know if it doesn't interfere with the students life or the potential arrest.

A far as contacting LE on this Driver and Car please call UVA police

@Hard work wins the game February 24th, 2013 | 8:43pm
Please not at all discounting your info. Did you not use a seldom used section on FM to reach out prior to the PHAM murder/ If so the FBI does know and did acknowledge.

There was another person, not at all saying that is possibly you' that was in constant contact as to the Jefferson Area Drug Enforcement (JADE) task force. It is wise to contact the FBI as the first report. Even on FM I stressed so much to do that, KJ and the army seemed to treat me as that I was from General Grant's army invading Robert E Lee's bedroom.

I think almost all can agree that the calls I took expressing the utter disgust that the 3 attempts to UVA, C'Ville and VSP were mis-filled were just the tip of bad Law Enforcement! These actions acknowledged in Rader's letter prove that in the future certainly call a Federal Agency!

Rader was not at fault and the agencies' actions were prior to his getting a handle on it, but he took the fall, he stood up and took one for the team!

I remember explicitly and recording all of it that the FM mods insisted that I call some tip line. Finally I begged them to give the closest FBI office. Only then did the info get through. After this VSP acknowledged that the person did infact report the valuable information, not once, not twice but three times.

That information and another contact pinged of the charts as to undisclosed information. Still is and will be. But this does allow for the possibility that " Hardwork" 's information may be credible. Harrington had been floating like a social butterfly those TWO days. As that this was not the first time but one of many times. I will state this and you can BANK on it, it was far from being the first time that the phone seemed to loose power. It was almost the normal thing! There is absolutely nothing wrong with her behavior, she was an adult and after being forced to remain a caterpillar and then kept in the cocoon what would one expect? Her Aunt can attest to these things CATerpillar. There is nothing CORNEY about it.

FBI was involved from the first 2 weeks with the Harrington case and it is documented. As you so easily explained the reason the East Coast Rapist.

As to this case the student last week ,UVA police is certainly the best place to report anything matching the descriptions.

As much as it seems that the vocal masses [not the majority of people] want a murder trial or for an accused to be gunned down, it is impossible. There will never be a conviction of murder in any degree in a trial. Not impossible is a confession, no trial and that could take 40 years and even then not conceding murder.

The young WOMAN was a social Butterfly and do not judge her! She was not murdered by the person that contacted me, nor the other two people that she was with! Maybe after, HARDWORKS THEORY WORKS, BUT THEN WE ARE TALKING ABOUT 72 HOURS AT LEAST!

SHE WAS A SOCIAL BUTTERFLY IN FLIGHT, that night, the next day and even later!

Hardwork, don't stop, call the FBI!

As pointed out to me by a dear woman friend.
Do we not have a true double standard here? If Morgan were a man and getting around she would be held up as a STUD. Patted on the back and she would wear it well. Even old Dan and Jill would have said, oh that kid he's just sowing wild oats. Use protection he's a great kid!

Are you starting to see the family dynamics, the sadness, the truth, the reasons to blame everyone else at no matter the cost. And I dare anyone to say if Morgan were a man and had been floating about that Morgan would not have been treated as a normal young adult, even in death!

Can't you people see the denial, it is like right infront of your faces. Just took 3 years to see the picture inside the picture. Speaking of, look at the eye and the eye in the eye of her painting.

The lady had promise, she truely did, thats the shame, but only the true shame. The rest is a back-fire of PR and that is not her shame, it is shame that she never had! She was proud, she was not ashamed! At all, ever!

As to Now, as to Morgan, well you know there was a communication to an individual on the phone that was not at the concert. In discovery the timing of that communication, the party on the other end and subject matter is certainly relevant to any civil case.

Law Enforcement was very nice as to say the person had been ruled out as to a subject in an abduction. But as my very dear friend J.me pointed out, yes maybe ruled out if the VSP held to their official timeline. But as J.me and I so often shared intimate information we jointly discovered perhaps that person may have possibly made contact if the time line were altered.

In a civil case presented by Jill. do you realize that everything from birth control, the above mentioned and 2 other people she dated. Not to mention her brother, the clubs in C'ville.

It goes on and on. They are being attacked in a civil lawsuit. They have discovery and thats Gil's night mare. But wait, all of this, every single word! Things that may have been ruled out as a fishing expedition in the civil case? Well people in a murder trial, it will all be explored. Every single line of every single post on every single bloogger and every anonymous name and every single action will be available to a man who's life or being sentenced to life!

He has aright to all of this, there is no-doubt and go and read the little consents all of you just blow past. I only use my real name and my copyrighted name, now, here's the news. If you post anywhere and do not attack anyone, you are say a woman and just do not want your information as to who you are, but you have what you feel is relevant, your fine. If you post here on The Hook then you have a double shield, in the land of Jefferson The Hook has rights to keep their sources.

If you attack someone using their real name, you maybe found if the Harrington's continue.

That is in a civil case if you are a party.

In a murder case, the defendant's right to a fair trial supersedes all other rights! If it is a Capitol crime there is no limit to what the defense can bring in! Every theory, every word. Every multiple use of screen names. Every anonymizer software aided printed word.

This is where PR will be the downfall. Yet it seems, the real truth has never been the goal on that case that you mentioned.

The good things are that this student this past week is alive. Good for the community is that she ave information, we are sure it was difficult. We hope she goes on and has a healthy life, that she thrives!

Thank God she survived!
