The week in review

Worst missing girl case: Jennifer Carolina Romero, 16, at first was believed to be a runaway when she disappeared from her Weyers Cave home March 2. Police now think that through social media, the teen may be ensnared in human trafficking, NBC29 reports. Mynor Franco-Depaz, 19, of Arlington, has been arrested, but no sign of Romero since her cellphone signal was traced to Arlington.

Worst loose cannon: Multiple gunshots are fired early March 8 on the Corner and a bullet goes through Mincer's front window, the Cav Daily reports. The shooter, believed to be a black male in his 20s, fled toward the Medical School.

Worst way to get back at your mom: Chancey Ramsey pleads guilty to arson March 8 for starting a fire in their Monticello Road home after arguing with his mother in August, according to NBC29. He'll be sentenced May 7.

Worst impersonation: Nelson resident Vasco Degama Wright II, 28, is accused of impersonating an officer March 8 at Barracks Road Shopping Center. The Newsplex reports Wright drove up to a man, said he was a cop and that the man had broken the law, pulled out a gun and grabbed the victim as he ran into a store.

Biggest bath salts sentence: C-Ville Video owner Lois Lee McDaniel is sentenced March 8 to 28 months in prison, three years supervised probation, and a $1,000 fine for selling the synthetic drugs from her video store, the Daily Progress reports.

Most expensive missing dog: Charlottesville Police's K-9 cop, Officer Leo, disappears in Orange County near the Albemarle line Saturday night, March 9, and turns up the next morning in the Preddy Creek area. WINA has the story.

Wait, another highly trained missing dog: Beta, an 11-month-old black Lab service dog, takes off March 9 in the Key West neighborhood after being spooked by horses, the DP reports. She was wearing a neon green vest.

Slightest increase: Albemarle supes vote 4-2 March 11 to advertise a 76.6 cents per $100 tax rate, up four-tenths of a cent over the current rate. The rate change would provide around $600,000 for the school shortfall. Supes Ken Boyd and Rodney Thomas were nays.

Latest City Council candidates: UVA grad student Adam Lees, 24, has filed to run for one of two open seats, according to Charlottesville Tomorrow. So has former independent-candidate-turned-Dem-candidate Bob Fenwick and community organizer Wes Bellamy. Councilor Kristen Szakos has announced she'll seek reelection; Councilor Dave Norris has said he will not.

Latest city commonwealth's attorney candidate: Incumbent Dave Chapman says he'll seek a sixth term. He'll be running against the man he unseated in 1993, Steve Deaton.

Latest in the National Slavery Museum morass: A 38-acre parcel donated for the museum, founded by former Governor Doug Wilder, could be sold at auction for $300,000 in unpaid property taxes to Fredricksburg, the AP reports. The museum filed for bankruptcy last year, which a judge dismissed, and New York City-based Pei Partnership Architects says it was stiffed for more than $6 million. The museum's attorney, Delegate Joe Morrissey, has requested a delay in the hearing that could okay the auction.

Tougher than TSA: UVA employees are asked to provide original birth certificates and marriage licenses to verify dependent eligibility for the university health plan, Ted Strong reports in the DP. So far an audit has turned up 90 ineligibles and indicates there could be more than 800 more among the 14,000 dependents, Dropping them could save $1.8 million.

Best showing by a former Progress reporter: AP State Department correspondent Matt Lee questions U.S. silence at a press conference after Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan calls Israel a "terrorist state" on March 11, the Blaze reports. By March 12, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland says the U.S. doesn't find Turkey's "harsh rhetoric" helpful.
