Lose your head

Ever been tempted to escape the monotony and struggles of your life by imagining your own fantasy world? Then you'll have a lot in common with young Zoé, the main character in Cirque du Soleil's production of Quidam, coming to the John Paul Jones Arena. Indeed, the entire show blossoms out of the young girl's imagination as she tries to break free from her own boredom and the parents who ignore her to find meaning in life. This surrealist art-inspired production by the world famous Canadian act that combines circus acts, street performance, music, elaborate set and costume designs, and provocative themes, has mesmerized countless audiences. Of course, escaping into fantasy from your own life could cause you a bit of trouble, so why not escape into the one that Cirque du Soleil has created for you, a place called Quidam…at least for a little while.

Wild horses shouldn’t drag you away

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of The Rolling Stones rock and roll debut, which means it's time for the 50th Anniversary Tribute Show of Satisfaction: The International Rolling Stones Show. Chris LeGrand, Satisfaction’s Mick Jagger and executive producer, founded the show in 2001 with a dream of making the first touring tribute act paying homage to the Stones, and it seems he's found some of his own satisfaction as the show tours almost constantly with 150 dates each year. LeGrand has over 30 years experience in the music industry and a bachelors degree in business, a background that's helped Satisfaction earn international acclaim as the most authentic show available honoring The Rolling Stones. “They shined like the real Stones,” raved the Las Vegas Sun, and CBS News of New York described the show as, “a must-see…you get Satisfaction.” If you’re a Stones fan or just need a reason to dance this weekend,  head on down to the Mall to witness an uncanny rendition of one of the most popular rock and rock bands in history.

Master storyteller
Ellis Paul can best be described as a singer/songwriter, a folk artist, and a troubadour. He proudly wears a tattoo of Woody Guthrie on his arm and is strongly influenced by folk music greats such as Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and James Taylor. He was born and raised in Maine, but got his musical start in Massachusettes while attending college. He came onto the scene in the early 1990s, when modern folk music was really hitting its stride, during a time when some of the country's top singer/songwriters were making it big. In his career so far, Paul has created 16 albums, a feature-length video, and a book of poetry. His songs have been featured on the soundtracks to several movies and television shows, and he has shared the stage with legends like Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Richie Havens, Shawn Colvin, Roger McGuinn, and Sugarland. Paul’s show at The Southern this weekend will open up with Jesse Harper, founding member and lead singer of Old School Freight Train. Harper’s sound draws from jazz, classical and folk music.
This show should make for a relaxed and intimate Sunday evening.

Buried Alive in Comedy

Aziz Ansari has been a fast bloomer in the comedy world. In less than a decade, he has covered the gamut of all things funny. He is currently starring in the popular NBC series Parks and Recreation, he starred in and co-created the hit sketch-comedy show for MTV Human Giant, and he has toured the country with his wildly funny stand-up specials. The Hollywood Reporter said that he “has become one of the most prolific writers and performers on the comedy scene in recent years,” and Rolling Stone magazine recently placed him on the cover of their special comedy issue labeling him, “The funniest man under 30.” Ansari has also had a fruitful career in the film world and was recently seen starring in the comedy 30 Minutes or Less with Jesse Eisenberg and Danny McBride. He was the voice of Squint in Ice Age: Continental Drift and he has several film projects set to hit in the next couple of years. His current tour, titled Buried Alive, is coming to Charlottesville this weekend and will touch on matters like Ansari’s fear of adulthood and how life changes after marriage and kids.
