Get Out! events, shows, things to do

If you treat an individual as he is, he will remain how he is. But if you treat him as if he were what he ought to be and could be, he will become what he ought to be and could be.” ~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Dreams of a child

It's a photography project parents would be crazy not to indulge in: a collaboration between photographer and child to capture kids in their favorite imaginary roles. A capped super-hero looking out over Charlottesville on the top of a parking garage; a fairy princess sprinkling fairy dust on the Downtown Mall. Local portrait photographer Lindsey Henry's "Inspired Sessions" takes children, dressed as their fantasy character, to various locations around town, and then turns the resulting photographs into a book that parent and child can take home with them. An exhibit of Henry's inspiring work, titled "Let's Pretend: the Inspired Child," will be on display at Piedmont CASA for First Fridays.

"I think these Inspired Sessions are powerful because the children get to experience and see themselves in roles they have only imagined up until now," says Henry.

Oddly enough, Henry was surprised to learn that it hasn't been the finished photographs that have been empowering to her subjects, but the act of creating them.

"The actual shoot tells kids that they count and that their creativity and imagination should be and can be heard,"  she says.

Intrigued?  An Inspired Session with Henry will be auctioned during the exhibit to benefit Piedmont CASA.
April 5, Piedmont CASA, 818 East High Street, 5-7pm, free

OPENING ACTS

Born To Do This

Marc Broussard is a singer/songwriter known for his talent channelling the spirits of classic R&B, rock and soul artists onto the modern stage. He's the son of Boogie Kings guitarist and Louisiana Hall of Fame member Ted Broussard, so it seems he was destined for a life in music. Throughout his upbringing in Louisiana, Broussard was immersed in the Southern sounds of R&B and has drawn from influences including Otis Redding, Brian McKnight and John Hiatt. In 2002, Broussard released his debut album, Momentary Setback, which he recorded and released independently when he was barely 20 years old. Broussard’s song “Home” off his 2004 album Carencro was his first big success, and launched him onto the national touring stage. Since then, he's released three more albums, and his music has been in many television shows and movies.  He's partnering with Vanguard records to release his next LP, which should be out this summer. His current tour is hitting the East Coast, Mid-Atlantic and the South, and he's making one of his first stops right here in Charlottesville. His opening act is the alternative rock band from Texas, Courrier.
April 6, The Jefferson, doors at 7pm, $15-$17

Geology and NASCAR?

Who would have thought that rocks and water have a direct correlation with Moonshine and NASCAR? You can find out how this weekend at the Rockfish Valley Foundation Natural History Center in Nellysford (pictured here). The exhibit, titled “Rocks to Racing,” will explain the connection between water and rocks and the local geology to Moonshine and NASCAR racing. “Yes, there is a connection!” they exclaim. The Rockfish Valley Foundation Natural History Center, located next to Spruce Creek Park, is an affiliate of the Virginia Museum of Natural History, which provided materials for this exhibit. The center does not charge admission, but they appreciate donations. And, after you uncover the mystery of how rocks connect to racing, the Rockfish Valley Foundation also offers walking trails along the Rockfish River with extensive birdwatching opportunities. There are also beautiful views of the Blue Ridge, and it’s only a mile or so away from local wineries, breweries, and restaurants.
April 6, Rockfish Valley Foundation Natural History Center, 10am-4pm, Free.

Tom Tom Festival Opening Gala

The notorious Tom Tom Festival is starting its weekend of free programming with a special "friends of friends" concert, featuring well-known musicians with close connections to C'ville. Blending Mexican folk music with indie rock, the David Wax Museum will headline. A partnership of guitarist David Wax and Charlottesville native Suz Slezak, their sound combines Latin rhythms and catchy indie-rock melodies, and they were described by Time Magazine as, “joyful Mexo-Americana fusion, with virtuosic musical skill and virtuous harmonies.” Joining them will be local favorite The Hill & Wood, one of Virginia’s most critically adored indie-rock bands since 2011, whose melodies have been compared to bands like Belle & Sebastian and Wilco and earned them spots on the festival circuit, including SXSW.

Finally, Nashville old-time singer/songwriter, Nora Jane Struthers (pictured here) will round out the line up. Her songs have a vintage and homespun feel, thriving on the use of traditional bluegrass instruments including fiddle, banjo, and mandolin, and she's already received recognition as one of the top up-and-coming voices on the Americana scene. This should be a well-rounded night of music and entertainment to kick-off the festival.
April 11, The Haven, doors at 6pm, Free.

The Cows bring an unique blend of reggae, rock, and ska to Miller's on Saturday, April 20. No cover. We play about 1/2 original and 1/2 cover tunes, and a lot of covers are rock tunes re-imagined as reggae grooves, borrowing as much musically from Grateful Dead as from Bob Marley. No cover, music starts at 10:45 pm.
