Stringdusters play for the MRC

Appropriately enough for this Hook music issue, our own Music Resource Center gets some love from the Grammy-nominated and highly eclectic bluegrass band The Infamous Stringdusters, as they perform a special benefit concert for the MRC at the Cider Barn at Verulam Farm on Bloomfield Road.  The concert will fund scholarships for low-income students to attend the MRC and allow them to receive music and technology education for free. Of course, tickets for the event are a bit pricey, but hey, its a benefit! Plus you get food catered by The Catering Outfit, an open beer and wine bar, and the first 100 ticket buyers get a custom screen-printed concert poster. And, of course, it's tax deductible. As for the Stringdusters, well, they're known for their complex, distinctive bluegrass tunes, as the group was founded in 2007 by two Berklee College of Music students.  What's more, Andy Hall (Dobro), Andy Falco (guitar), Chris Pandolfi (banjo), Jeremy Garrett (fiddle), and Travis Book (upright bass) also contribute to our local music scene by helping to produce The Festy Experience, the three-day music festival in Nelson County founded in 2010. Fridays After Five, week two
Cha’s Cha’s Cadillac, an upbeat rockabilly band from Richmond, is performing at the next Fridays After Five. If you love songs from Elvis, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eddie Cochran, The Stray Cats, or The Clash, then you won’t want to miss this performance. Cha’s Cha’s Cadillac got their name from Cha-Cha DiGregorio, the fiery dancer in the film Grease, which suits the band because their goal is to bring back origins of rock and roll, rockabilly, and country. They also write their own songs, available on their first original CD entitled, Midnight Dixie Radio. Their new record is a concept album that takes you through a midnight radio show, with tunes that are sure to make you nostalgic for the days of hotrods and jukeboxes. Erin Lunsford and the Smokey Bandits, a local group from Fincastle, are the opening act.

  Seacrest is definitely out, but The Paramount Idol is the biggest singing competition in Charlottesville and it’s coming back for its second season. Auditions to compete are free and open to the public, just make sure you pre-register and that you’re over 15 years old. Participants will sing their hearts out for a chance to win the first place prize, which includes $1,000 cash, a professional consultation session with Bruce Flohr, CSO & EVP of Red Light Management and Partner ATO Records, an opportunity to perform at a Paramount event in the next year, and a professional demo recording session at White Star Sound recording studio. Second place receives $500 and the recording session, third place receives $250 and the recording session. This is a perfect opportunity for Charlottesville’s undiscovered stars to show off their very best. Last year’s winner, Jennifer Stuart, has gone on to perform with Maxine Jones, originally of En Vogue, and joined the band In Full as their lead singer.

Music lovers, go to Lovingston
Less than an hour's drive from Charlottesville, at the oldest winery in Virginia, some of the best local and almost-local artists are performing this Sunday. Nestled in the mountains of Lovingston, with gorgeous verdant views and abundant wildlife, the Mountain Cove Vineyard is hosting their third semiannual music festival. The main act, Tony Trischka, is considered the most influential banjo player in the roots music world. Trischka hails from Syracuse, New York, where his love for banjo playing began in the early 1960s. Throughout the sixties and seventies, Trischka was a member of the bands Down City Ramblers, Country Granola, Breakfast Special, and others. He has cut numerous solo albums and has recently played with famous comedian and banjo player, Steve Martin. Other acts at the Mountain Cove Music Festival include authentic African drumming master Darrell Rose, Charlottesville rock band From Here on Blue, young singer/songwriter Josh Mayo, and Blue Ridge Mountain folk band, Yankee Dixie. There will also be vegetarian food, seafood, barbecue, and more from local vendors.
