Picture this: LOOK3 is a must see

We are bombarded with images today like never before; indeed even our phones have become cameras, and almost nothing can happen in the world without some or all of it being caught in images. Still, it matters who is behind the lens, and as the annual LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph always reminds us, the world and its many wonders and horrors in the hands of a master photographer can make us see things in ways we never imagined.

Of course, the first clues that the festival is imminent are the large photographs that go up in the trees on the Downtown Mall. This year, the trees are alive with birds of paradise by wildlife photographer Tim Laman, who'll give a talk on his work on June 11 at the Paramount Theater.  Billed this year as as "3 days of peace, love and photography," the Festival will feature internationally known photographers like Gregory Crewdson, Josef Koudelka, Susan Meiselas, Richard Misrach, Michael Nichols, and Carrie Mae Weems, for talks, workshops, classes, and exhibitions. There will also be parties! On Friday, June 14, there's a big Tom Tom Festival-style block party in front of the McGuffey Art Center, and on Saturday, June 15 there's a late-night party at the Jefferson Theater. There's also a "Big Love Artist Reception" in the Paramount Theater on Saturday, where you can meets the artists.

An Apple a Day

For one day only, at the top of a mountain, Charlottesville's leading eco-friendly businesses will be promoting their goods and services. The Foundation of Wellness Professionals (FWP) is hosting its first Annual Family Health Fair at Carter Mountain Orchard.

Dr. Alisa Gates, a member of the FWP and owner of Body Equilibrium, says Carter Mountain Orchard is an ideal setting for the health fair because it increases awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Families can enjoy the outdoors, all-natural products, body alignment, exercise, and tasty but nutritious foods.

The Foundation for Wellness Professionals provides free educational workshops on a variety of topics that are designed around disease prevention and solutions to current health issues.

In the event of rain, the fair will be held on Sunday, June 9.

Do you love watching Antiques Roadshow to find out how much an item is worth, betting on whether that vase is priceless or worthless? The second annual Better with Age: An Antique Appraisal and Fund Raising Event is back, and it’s your chance to find out if that junk in your attic is really historical memorabilia.

Attendees get the chance to have their treasures appraised by experts while helping JABA raise funds for health care and nutritious meals for “at-risk” seniors in Central Virginia. A ticket gets you one appraisal, wine tasting, light appetizers, and free parking at The Omni. Locally famous musician Jim Wray will provide live jazz piano.

This year, JABA has brought in the real professionals with the addition of Ken Farmer and Matthew Quinn, frequent guest appraisers on Antiques Roadshow and Market Warriors, along with expert appraisers from their staff at Quinn & Farmer Auctions. After half a century, Joan Baez is a musical legend whose influence is immeasurable. She’s been part of some of the biggest historical benchmarks in her time, marching with Martin Luther King Jr. and standing alongside Nelson Mandela at his 90^th birthday celebration. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award at The Grammys in 2007, and she’s released 24 studio albums so far, still belting out lyrics with that uniquely powerful vocal style.

Decades into their musical career, the Indigo Girls have proven their success by the enormous and loyal following they’ve kept. Emily Saliers and Amy Ray started performing together in high school, and have since grown from a small-time folk rock duo to Grammy award-winning artists, winning in 1990 for Best Contemporary Folk Recording. Like Baez, they are involved in a number of social causes and they’ve sold over 14 million records, landing on Billboard’s Top 40 titles in each of the last four decades. It’s going to be an evening packed with folk legendry, so don’t forget your lighter.
