LOOK3 at the Pavilion

On most weekends the Pavilion is a feast for the ears, but this weekend it becomes a feast for the eyes as the LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph presents Shots & Works, a multimedia show of 20 pro photogs projecting their work on a 40-foot screen at the Pavilion. This two-hour show will include visual essays on everything from photojournalism to natural history, incorporating narratives, music, and interviews. This will happen twice this weekend, once on Friday night and once on Saturday night. Free Friday night; $10 on Saturday night. June 14 and 15, Ntelos Wireless Pavilion, 9pm, free/$10

Fridays After Five, Week Eight
Kathryn Caine will be joined by Ian Gilliam, Billy Brockman, Eddie Hall and Sonny Lane to form the soulful roots Americana band known as Kathryn Caine and the Small Band.
Caine's voice will lure you towards the Pavilion with her high and lonesome call, while the band cranks out upbeat sounds of bluegrass and country rock to get your toes tapping.
Kathryn Caine has released six albums of her own that are influenced by genres ranging from gospel to rock n' roll. She has an old-time twangy voice, which pairs beautifully with soulful lyrics. On her own, Caine has opened for performers like Phil Vassar and most recently Jamey Johnson and Josh Turner.
Opening up for Kathryn Caine and the Small Band is The Sally Rose Band, who hail from Nellysford. Front woman Sally Rose has been compared to singers like Sheryl Crow and Grace Potter. The band recently signed on with Country Wide Records, and will put out their first recording, a five-song EP, this June.

Are you there Judy? It’s us, Charlottesville.
Famous YA author Judy Blume is making a guest appearance at Vinegar Hill Theater this weekend to showcase a new film based on her novel of the same title, Tiger Eyes. Vinegar Hill will open Tiger Eyes on Friday, June 14, and Judy Blume herself will show up at the 4pm and 7pm screenings of the film on Sunday, June 16.
Blume is famous for her novels that have helped guide tween and teen readers through their troubled adolescence. In almost 50 years, she's written dozens of books including Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret and Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing.
Blume's books will be available for purchase for signing at the event or you can order them in advance through Over The Moon Bookstore and Artisan Gallery in Crozet, which is offering next-day pick-up. Advanced tickets for the show are also available to purchase online at www.visulitecinemas.com.

Start wearing pink!
Get your dad a pink neck tie this Father's Day so he can wear it to the 9th Annual Pink Ribbon Polo Classic at King Family Vineyards. All proceeds from this event will benefit the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation and Every Woman's Life to help raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.
There will be beautiful horses, the traditional divot stomp and boutique vendors. You can head over to the winery for a tasting or stay seated and let the wine come to you while you enjoy the exciting sport of polo. There's also a raffle you can enter for prizes and an awards ceremony for the winning polo team.
King Family Vineyards is nestled in the vast and beautiful mountains of Crozet, so get there early to take in the scenery and do some shopping. Vendors include Pink Palm, Freestyle, Scarpa, Sweethaus, The Early Bird Gallery and many more. Tickets are available for purchase online and at the winery. They will also be available for purchase at the gate on the day of the event.

A crash course in romance
Looking for a great summer read that's romantic and full of drama? Hilary Reyl's, Lessons in French is just that. And you can meet the author of this highly recommended novel at New Dominion Bookshop on Monday evening.
Reyl's debut novel is set in 1989. The Berlin Wall has just come down, and our leading character, Kate, has just graduated from Yale eager to pursue her life as a painter. When she receives a job offer to work as the assistant to Lydia Schell, a famous American photographer in Paris, she immediately accepts. Reviews for the coming-of-age tale have been glowing. Oprah.com listed Lessons in French as one of the, "7 Dreamy Novels Set in the Most Romantic City in the World," and Stephen McCauley, author of Insignificant Others says he became "so caught up in the story, I almost believed I was young, living in a Parisian garret, and fluent in French."
Reyl grew up in California and moved to France with her family for two years when she was 11 years old. She graduated from Yale and moved to Paris in 1989, so it's safe to say she draws from personal experience.
Bring your copy of Lessons in French to New Dominion for a signing and reading from Reyl. This event is free and open to the public.
