Get Out! events, shows, things to do

"Don't ever try and be like anybody else and don't be afraid to take risks." - Waylon Jennings

He Put the "O" Back in Country

Shooter Jennings is the only child of country stars Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, and it shows. You can tell just by looking at him that Jennings lived and breathed country music from infancy. He reportedly spent the first years of his life in a crib on his parents' tour bus with artists like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson. It's no wonder he ended up as one of the biggest country rock idols of this era.
Performing on the same stage is Cody Purvis. Standing at 6'6", he really stands out of the crowd. And, even though he's only 19 years old, Purvis likes to keep the traditional country roots alive. While growing up in Virginia, his greatest musical influences were Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams Jr., and Toby Keith. His concerts are known to have a lot of energy, so be prepared to stay on your feet.
Opening for these two country giants is Chris Adams from Hanover County, Virginia. He's opened up for national artists like Blake Shelton, Little Big Town, and Taylor Hicks. This show at The Jefferson should be a country fan's dream, so don't miss out.
July 12, Jefferson Theater, 7:45pm, $18-$20

OPENING ACTS

It's summertime in Wintergreen

There's no excuse for boredom this summer if you know about the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival and Academy, a season long affair that features 232 events at the Nelson County resort. This year's theme is "In My Mind's Eye: Image, Imagery and Imagination in the Arts." You can get ticket packages for just a few shows or you can get a summer pass and see as many shows as your heart desires.

The music will be mostly classical, but there will also be jazz, plus theater, seminars, art exhibits, cooking classes, wine tastings and more.
The festival has been around since 1997 and has been rising in popularity ever since. It's a perfect opportunity to spend a few days away at a mountain resort and not have to pay the expensive airfares. Or, you can just drive over to sample a bunch of activities in one day.
Enjoy your morning coffee while listening to live classical music at the Coffee Concerts or indulge in gourmet cupcakes at the post-concert garden parties. It's a well rounded season of music, theater, and art.
July 8-August 14, Wintergreen Resort, 9am, $50-$420

 Puccini at the Paramount
With beautiful melodies, decadent costumes and sets, renowned artists and a timeless plot of love and loss, the Ash Lawn Opera’s production of the classic Italian opera La bohème just might turn even the most stubborn guest into an opera fan. Performed at the Paramount Theater on the Downtown Mall, the four-act masterpiece by the famous composer Puccini tells a tale of young lovers, jealousy, and tragedy. First performed in Italy in 1896, La bohème has now become one of the most frequently performed operas of all time. Though sung in the original Italian, English subtitles on a screen at the Paramount help the audience follow along, and the cast includes world-class singers who've performed at the Met as well as talented local kids. Sounds to us like a night of class and entertainment for all ages.
July 12 at 7:30pm; July 14 at 2pm, July 17 at 7:30pm, July 19 at 7:30pm. Paramount Theater,  $11-$65, midweek discounts available.

La Fête Nationale
July is a powerful month for patriotism. Just 10 days after America's Independence Day festivities, France celebrates its own national holiday, Bastille Day, which commemorates the beginning of the French Revolution on July 14, 1789. Here in Charlottesville, the Alliance Francaise Charlottesville, a nonprofit that promotes French language and culture, is hosting an art show and reception at the home of artist Anne de la Tour-Hopper, whose works will be shown along with paintings by Malcolm Hughes, Milenko Katic, Mouna Smires, and Lorraine Momper. Guests at the 14 Juilllet Reception and Art Auction will also be treated to international cuisine and will learn the French game "Petanque," a game similar to bocce ball.
July 14, 1-5pm, $15-30. Register at afcville.org or call 434-260-0640.
