Get Out! events, shows, things to do

"I see artists bored by light-without-heat, irked at gigantic galleries pushing out art-as-product, leaving behind the overdetermined for the undetermined, guided by interior voices and bringing us out of a long tunnel to new blueness." - Jerry Saltz

The Lion The Beast The Beat

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals formed in 2002 but didn't get national recognition until 2005 with the debut album, Nothing but the Water. Since then, the Vermont-based band has carved out its own unique sound with a timeless identity.
In the beginning, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals self-produced all their albums and toured the country extensively, playing up to 200 shows a year. In 2005 they signed with Hollywood Records and put out four studio albums, embodying subgenres such as blues, folk, hard rock, and indie rock.
Title vocalist Grace Potter has a voice evoking the gritty and bluesy sounds of Janis Joplin. She, along with drummer Matt Burr, guitarist Scott Tournet, guitarist Benny Yurco, and bassist Michael Libramento, give off a vibrant energy on stage that translates directly to their audience. “I think what people love about us is the energy we generate playing together and feeding off each other,” says Tournet.
Joining them at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion is Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, from, you guessed it, New Orleans. Fronted by Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews, the Orleans Avenue band is made up of Mike Ballard on bass, Pete Murano on guitar, Joey Peebles on drums, Dan Oestreicher on baritone sax and Tim McFatter on tenor sax.
August 14, nTelos Wireless Pavilion, 7pm, $35

Rogers and Hammerstein's Carousel

It's the second musical by duo Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein II, adapted from Ferenc Molnar's 1909 play, Liliom. Shying away from the pair's usually bright and sunny story lines, Carousel is considered to be one of the best musicals to ever hit the stage and the silver screen.
Carousel is set in a Maine coastline town. The story revolves around carousel barker Billy Bigelow, whose relationship with mill-worker Julie Jordan comes at the price of both their jobs. Billy attempts a robbery to provide for Julie and their unborn child. But, after it goes terribly wrong, he is given one last chance to make things right. The show includes well-known songs "If I Loved You," "June Is Bustin' Out All Over," and "You'll Never Walk Alone".
The production by Ash Lawn Opera will be brought to The Paramount stage by artists from the Metropolitan Opera and other famous theaters. If you loved the 1956 film adaption, then you'll adore this live performance with a full orchestra, a beautiful set and costumes, and a well-known cast that includes some local performers.
August 9, 7:30pm and August 11, 2pm. Paramount Theater. $11-$65

An edible arrangement

The Edible Food Fest in Orange, in its second year, is a one-day homage to the farm-to-table movement. It's attracted more than 3,500 people to downtown Orange, and it's back again this Saturday.
The festival will have cooking demos by local chefs like Ian Boden of Glass Haus Kitchen, Aaron Cross of Fossett's, and Gail Hobbs-Page of Caromont Farm. And, the day is loaded with experienced speakers like Tom Burford, commonly known as "Professor Apple," who will tell you everything you need to know about the forbidden fruit. Beer master Taylor Smack of Blue Mountain Brewery gives a beer lecture, and local author and hunter Jackson Landers (the man behind this week's Hook cover story) shares his adventures. UVA's Tanya Denckla Cobb, author of Reclaiming Our Food, plus noted educator and farmer, Leni Sorensen, and Southern Exposure Seed Exchange leader, Ira Wallace, will also share their knowledge. Music will be provided by Terri Allard, Michael Coleman, and Adrienne Young Ramsey.
And, of course there's food galore. Go to the Edna Lewis Dining Court to find a veritable smorgasbord from Central Virginia's best farms and restaurants. Plus, there's a market where you can buy food and kitchen products. There's also a "Kids Station" with games, organic ice pops, and pizza-making.
August 10, Downtown Orange, 10am

The Man Who Sold the World

Join The Jefferson Theater for a night of music and art, all inspired by the iconic impact that David Bowie has had on the world.
"The Thin White Duke's" repertoire covers almost five decades, which leaves plenty of inspiration for the night's participating bands and DJ's. The Three Witches will be spinning some glam rock and manning the "Glam Cam" for all attendees that come dressed to impress. Don't worry if you forget your face paint though, The Jefferson has you covered.
Rich Tarbell's locally-made interpretations of classic album art, including several Bowie jackets, will be on display as well.
The local bands paying tribute are the Astronomers, The Fire Tapes, and Tom Dean & The Jean Genies. Whether you're a fan of just his early career, his gender-bending fashion, or if you just love Labyrinth, you should honor this rock god along with the best that Charlottesville has to offer. So, put on your red shoes and dance the blues.
August 17, Jefferson Theater, 7:30pm, $10-$12
