On the Road Again for local farms

Country legend Willie Nelson is returning to the Charlottesville Pavilion, and this time he's standing up for Central Virginia farmers. His son's band, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, will be opening up for him to share his support for Local Food Hub.

Willie Nelson grew up on a farm in Texas working in the fields and tending to his family's crops, so he's been a longtime advocate for family-owned farms. He eventually went on to co-found Farm Aid in 1985 with fellow musicians John Mellencamp and Neil Young. In 2001, Dave Matthews joined the Farm Aid Board of Directors. Nelson continues to support farms in America today and raises funds to keep the land in the hands of the farmers.

The concert will help raise money for Local Food Hub and its mission, which is to improve small farm activity and increase access to local food. The Hub has programs that allow small Virginia farms to sell their locally grown produce and meat to large customers like public schools, hospitals, restaurants, and grocery stores. 

Nelson's show at the Pavilion should be a real treat for his fans this year, because he's not just showing us what he does well, he's also doing what he loves for a cause that he's so passionate about.

Short films by short people 

The next Scorsese or Spielberg could be right here in Charlottesville. The only way to find out is by attending the 12th Annual Light House Film Festival at The Jefferson. Since 1999, Light House Studio has been fostering our local film-making youth, helping them to create hundreds of documentary, dramatic, and animated films. Many of Light House's students have gone on to receive national awards for their films, like the Peabody Award and World Medals at the New York International Film and Television Festival.

Light House is a non-profit organization that collaborates with dozens of other non-profits and schools to teach filmmaking to the most talented youth in our area. Last year, they worked with organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters, The Boys and Girls Club, Music Resource Center, the Virginia Film Festival, Shenandoah National Park, and Local Food Hub.

The film festival begins with a cocktail hour and lots of hors d'oeuvres, brought to you by Harvest Moon. At 8pm, the film screenings begin, featuring a variety of short films by the students.

Local band releases Phantoms

If you know about Charlottesville bands, then you definitely know about The Fire Tapes. If you don't, then it's time you learn. The band is releasing their second album, Phantoms, on September 17, following their CD release celebration performance at The Southern this Friday the 13th.

There is no other band in Charlottesville like The  Fire Tapes. With their spacey, psychedelic sound and heavily-weighted vocals, their music is strange yet accessible. The band says they're mostly inspired by Sonic Youth and Velvet Underground, but they also have elements of classic rock, pop and even country, if that's actually possible. Singer and guitarist Betsy Wright's haunting vocals make you feel as though you're in a dream sequence, running through an endless hallway. The rest of the band, made up of guitarist Todd Milton, bassist Rob Dobson, and drummer Mark McLewee make each song complex and textured while maintaining that toe-tapping quality that keeps C'ville audiences coming back.

Sharing the evening with The Fire Tapes are bands Canary Oh Canary from Richmond and Residual Echoes all the way from California.

Her Favorite Song

Andrew Mayer Cohen has gone by many monikers— he performs and records hip-hop under the stage name Haircut, and whenever he performs his soul music with other musicians on stage, he refers to the band as Mayer Hawthorne and The County, but we mostly know Cohen as the Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter Mayer Hawthorne, which is a combination of his middle name and the street he grew up on in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Since 2009, Mayer Hawthorne has rocketed toward success and released three studio albums. His songs have been featured in movies and television, and he has toured with pop icons like Bruno Mars and Foster The People. His genre has been classified as neo-soul because of its obvious roots in obscure '60s and '70s soul music, but with a modern electronic twist. His latest album, titled Where Does This Door Go, was released in July this year featuring instant hits like "Her Favorite Song" and "Designer Drug," which stray further from the obscure and lean closer towards modern R&B.

This is sure to be an uplifting show at The Jefferson. The opening band, Superhumanoids, is a dream-pop group from Los Angeles that describes their work as "Music to help kiss the doldrums away."
