UVA grad dies during "marathon swim"

Twenty-six-year-old Fran Crippen, a 2006 UVA grad and member of the U.S. national swimming team, died during a 10 kilometer race in open water today in the United Arab Emirates. The cause of his death is under investigation.

The ater was 80 degrees thats crazy.....

I am so sorry for his family's loss. I hope that others around them are kind and that they feel God near themin this difficult time.

It's like riding a motorcycle, you assume the risk. It is what it is. "If you are meant to be shot, you will not be hung..."

The whiners are already rising up to complain about the organizers and why they let this event go on. Were the participants forced into the water? What was the responsibility of this dead guy, or did he not have any to get out of the water?

I think it's fair to say that better observation should take place. He chose to go on though he wasn't feeling well, and I can't really say the event is responsible for that. It might also be better if every swimmer has to pass a physical before going on to the next stage.

Unfortunately, with water temperatures that high, he would have no chance of recovering from a drowning.
