Cavs two wins away from another trip to Omaha
With the UVA baseball team’s 5-3 win over St. John’s yesterday, the first time the Cavaliers (47-11) have won a regional on their home turf, ESPN will shine the national spotlight on Davenport Field this weekend (June 11-14) for a 3-game super regional match-up against Oklahoma (44-15). Will the Cavs make it to the College World Series for a second year in a row?

Finally a Hook article about this. I rely on readthehook.com for daily local info but I have been disappointed in your coverage of UVA baseballs recent success. No announcement about Charlottesville being selected to host a regional (during Alumni weekend no less). No reporting on the regional games until after it is all over. No mention that this is the first time we have hosted a super regional. Do I have to go to the Associated Press for this? (Please don't let the Cville scoop you either.)
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP)ââ?¬â?Branden Kline pitched 5 1-3 solid innings and Virginia got just enough offense to advance to the super regional with a 5-3 victory against St. John’s on Monday night.
The Cavaliers advanced to their first super regional at home in program history.
Virginia (50-12) set a school record for victories in a season by prevailing in a game that was very much like the one St. John’s won on Sunday night. Only this time, reliever Kevin Arico stymied the Red Storm late with 3 2-3 shutout innings to finish them off.
St. John’s (43-20) won twice on Sunday to force the deciding game, and got good enough pitching from Kyle Hansen and three relievers to win, but couldn’t get the key hit.
Kline (5-0) and Arico scattered 11 hits and escaped jams in the sixth and eighth innings.
Do not forget the other programs that are doing well. Now if the basketball and football programs can do the same UVA will be the sports powerhouse of the country.
The turnaround of both the UVA mens tennis and baseball teams is remarkable. I can remember during the 90's when attendance to either could be measured on two hands.
