Will Circuit City survive here?

With home-grown Crutchfield to its north and category-killing Best Buy to its south, the Charlottesville outpost of Circuit City may have already struggled to find its consumer electronics niche. Now the battered Richmond-based company is so desperate to stave off bankruptcy that it's considering closing 150 of its nearly 1,500 stores, a solution one analyst likened to "putting a Band-Aid on a broken leg." A spokesperson for Albemarle Square said the shopping center has received no notification of any closure.

No. It won't survive anywhere.

Best Buy vs Circuit City -- it really is a no brainer when actually shopping. Whenever I need an item, I go online and see which store has the item cheaper. Circuit City always seems to have the weekly releases of new DVD movies cheaper. And on a Western Digital 500G hard drive recently, Circuit City had the exact same hard drive $40 cheaper than Best Buy. I hope they can survive locally. And while I can't recall her name (Michelle maybe?), the Circuit City manager is one of the nicest people you will ever meet in either Circuit City or Best Buy!

That would be a shame. Best Buy is a very annoying place to shop, although the one in Cville doesn't seem as bad as the Richmond ones.

The closing list was released this morning, it appears the charlottesville store is closing.

I think this was a very interesting piece about a very worthwhile effort. Who wrote the story?? (I didn't see any byline...don't forget to include that!)

I am a teacher with more than 50% boys in my class. Of those boys, 6 of them have been diagnosed with ADHD. For this child, it isn't his physisal hyeractivity that is a problem for me. I let my boys joke around and be silly, and I even have a giggle/noismaking break at the end of the day so all of the kids can let loose...what hurts this student the most is his academic performace.

When he is able to focus, he is my best student in the class. When he is not able to focus, it looks like he knows nothing. Part of my job is to help them stay on task. If they need to stand and stretch, they can, and I don't mind. I even do exercises with them in my room. My class library has a mix of fiction and non-fiction, high interest books. I have gotten my boys hooked on books, and they love reading non-fiction.

And so, the point of what I am saying is that almost all of them are succeeding and happy students in my class. I think the problem is that more teachers need to be in tune with what boys want. Since I have mostly boys, I have sports pictures up in my room, and cool things to get their interest. As teachers, we need to be aware of the needs of boys and of girls too, and meet those needs. I have no problem with girls leading the way, but I want my boys to have the chance for success too.

What I like about the Village School and the Field School is that it separates boys and girls during the middle school years. I'm a teacher at one of the high schools in our area, and the students I see enter high school quite unprepared to deal with the social scene - boys and girls alike. Giving middle school age students an environment free from distraction of the opposite sex allows them to explore subjects and ideas they might be hesitant to try otherwise for fear of being too "girly" or too "brainy". With a stronger sense of identity and self awareness I think students would be better able to negotiate the social scene of high school while maintaining interest in education, and personal integrity.
I whole-heartedly support single sex education at the middle school level.

Give please. Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'Press On' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.
