UVA alum Zimmerman christens new stadium

Last night, with the game tied at two runs apiece and one out away from extra innings, Washington Nationals third baseman and UVA alum Ryan Zimmerman blasted a solo, walk-off home run to give his team the 3-2 win over the Atlanta Braves on Opening Night. The homer was also the first for the home team in the history of brand-new Nationals Park, located on the bank of the Anacostia River in downtown D.C.

Before all is said and done, it's very possible that Ryan Zimmerman will make more of an impact in the pros than any UVA alum who came before him in any sport. He's got it all, and they are building the entire franchise around him.

NOT the first homer in the history of brand-new Nationals Park - that honor went to Chipper Jones of the Atlanta Braves in the 4th inning!

Go Braves!!

I stand corrected. Thanks, VirginiaBravo.

No problem!

Zimmerman also made the cover of Sports Illustrated (kinda - he made the fold-in part of an over-sized cover)!
