Monticello Media launches ‘[email protected]′

Only a month after acquiring Clear Channel's six Charlottesville radio stations, Monticello Media Group is already heralding change in the local radio market. At 5pm today, they launched the new [email protected], based on the idea that they will play "Anything. Anytime."

"Tom is anything but traditional," heralds a press release. "Tom may play a U2 song, followed by the Bee Gees, then Matchbox 20, Lou Rawls, Def Leppard, Madonna, Nickelback, then Earth Wind & Fire."

According to Monticello Media general manager Dennis Mockler, the station is not intended to fulfill any particular niche, but the mix of genres is simply a response to what the local market says it wants. "We asked people what they liked to listen to, what they thought of current stations, and this is what they told us they wanted– a diverse selection of music," he says. "So we've acquired a catalogue of 1,500 songs. I challenge anybody to come close to that."

With an estimated library of 3,300 songs and counting, Charlottesville Radio Group's 106.1-FM The Corner has achieved success since its launch a year ago with the similar idea of a format that defies genre. However, Corner programming director Brad Savage perceives a key difference that could allow his station and the new kid on the block to co-exist. "It seems like they are less concerned about introducing new artists and more concerned with playing well-established artists who are different from each other," he says.

Specifically, Savage says it sounds to him like the new station falls into the burgeoning "Jack" format– which focuses on playing the hits from a broad range of eras and genres on the same station.

"These kinds of stations might play Metallica's 'Enter Sandman' followed by Rick James' 'Superfreak,'" explains Savage. "Both are big hits, but it's surprising to hear them juxtaposed on the same station."

According to Edison Media Research, the format has gained traction in markets like St. Louis, Portland, Oregon, and closer to home in Norfolk. However, the experiment has failed elsewhere, most ignominiously when longtime New York oldies station 101.1 WCBS renamed itself "Jack FM" in 2005, only to revert back to the old name and format two years later.

You're spot-on Music Lover. Totally phoney-baloney.

What in the world is going on? Where is Kidd? I don't know Tom, but Tom belongs on myspace. Bring back Kidd Kraddick in the Morning. My day depends on it. Whatever.

It appears the Kidd Kraddick fan club has found this site.

I cannot believe Kidd Kraddick isn't on 107.5 anymore! I don't want to listen to "Tom"! I want Kidd back! And Kelly and Big Al! Please bring them all back so my day can be complete. I will tune in every morning just to hear if Kidd is talking..if not, I will turn the station immediately. If you don't listen to me, then I won't be listening to you.

Kidd Kraddick was the only interesting morning show....Please bring it back!!!!

What's wrong with people that own and operate radio stations? Sure, you can save money by not hiring any DJs. You can also save money when you buy a car with no engine but what good is it? Why can't these people wake up and realize that it's the DJs on the air that make a radio station work? It's the number one thing that's missing from today's radio. Anyone who doubts this theory should check out the article about Dick Mountjoy in the latest edition of The Hook. This man is a well-respected local radio legend. Why? Because he was REAL. He not only made on-air announcements, he established a relationship with those who listened to him. This is what radio was all about and should still be. Think about who's on the air in town today that will be looked upon in such a way 30 or 40 years from now? Some people liked Kidd Kraddock, but when you think about it..that show is just another one of those canned morning shows for stations that don't want to pay for any real in-house talent. Kidd Kraddock is available for listening online, so why bother listening to the same show on the FM dial? Listening to Charlottesville's 107.5 has not been worth the power it takes to operate a radio since the original days of "Mix 107.5." The first "Mix 107.5" had REAL PEOPLE on the air who programmed their music and shows locally. Remember the 80s music show Brian Demay hosted on Saturday nights? In those days, Mix 107.5 had some real personalities playing GOOD MUSIC including classic rock tunes and other known pop songs from the 70s, 80s, and 90s not this watered-down crap that most radio stations play into the ground. Remember how good radio stations sounded when there was actual people on the air talking to their listeners and not talking AT them? Remember when radio DJs actually sounded like they were having fun on the air and they made it entertaining to listen to? Today there's no selection or variety on the dial, especially in Charlottesville. How much boring so called "family-friendly" radio programming can anyone take before they finally turn it all off? Not everyone is going to like everything any radio station plays, but why aren't there any stations with some real guts? It's as if broadcast companies are on a mission to kill their radio stations. No wonder listeners are turning to satellite radio. It's a sad world when radio has become so bad that listeners are willing to pay for something they used to get and should still be getting for free.

I fretted all weekend, since I heard "Tom" take over Friday afternoon, that I would not be able to hear Kidd Kraddick on Monday morning! And I was correct with my fretting! When 6am rolled around and I didn't hear Kidd and the gang, I turned off 107.5! And I encourage everyone else to do just that...at least until they bring Kidd back!

NO! Why in the world did you take off Kidd Kraddick in the Morning? This station did that a few years ago, when it went jazz, and when it brought Kidd back, I was so happy. I won't listen to your station - I'll listen to Kidd online. Seriously, though - why did you take it off? Yay for updating your playlist - please tell me you've taken off Hootie and the Blowfish! - but that is actually MORE in line with the music they talk about on Kidd Kraddick, not less...!

Argghhh. Very annoyed.

Hey Musiclover, why is it so important to you if people are using their full names or not? I wonder if you even listened to Kidd. Maybe if you had you wouldn't be using phrases like "sockpuppet chicanery"! By the way if you haven't guessed already, I miss Kidd (why don't you take Tom, Musiclover)! Let's bring Kidd back!

I cannot believe that for the second time KIDD Kraddick has been taken off the radio. I am very dissapointed and will no longer listen to 107.5, which is a shame because it is a great station. Tom is fine for the rest of the day, but KIDD needs to be on in the mornings. I am sure you will see a decline in your ratings.

Hey Doubters!! I don't see you using your full name either! I know several people who listen to Kidd Kraddick and forwarded this link to them so they could leave a comment. (I personally know three of the other commentators) I didn't use my full name because I didn't see anyone else using their's. (at least I used my name and not a random comment) The fact that he wasn't on the air was the main topic of conversation at my office Monday morning. Maybe all the comments just mean he's well loved. Did you even listen to him? Why are you even commenting suggesting that our comments are phoney! We miss Kidd!

I liked Kidd and the music before so I really had few issues with the station. Now without Kidd - the music is well, just sort of bland. I drive back and forth to Richmond - this station sounds like Liberty? Is that where they got the idea? So much for no cookie cutter stuff...

I liked Kidd. Music is otherwise ho-hum. Like 106.1 better. If I want this stuff, I guess I can turn to Z-95. What happened to Stephani(e) - or however you spell her name in the afternoons?

Music Lover is either a station thug or the consultant...Somebody not in Cville programming the music there, Tom? How about it - who is it? How is that different than San Antonio? Not much is it?

Bring back Kidd Kraddick! I was so disappointed this morning when I turned on your station only to find that Kidd was gone. That is really the only reason I listened to your station so I will likely stick with 106.1 now. I get that you are trying for a similar music model but I'm happy with 106.1 for that. If you bring back Kidd in the morning I may listen to your music mix later in the day, but otherwise my dial is staying where it is.

As a grizzled radio person who grew up in D.C. during the heyday of truly revolutionary FM radio (WHFS, WGTB, etc) where the DJs played what they wanted to and there was no corporate overlord dictating playlists, the whole Jack/Sam/Tom phenomenon reeks - literally REEKS of laziness and scores a zero for imagination. It has ushered in the host-less radio station - DJs cost money, you know, so removing the on-air personnel is a huge savings - which means no news, no weather, no local connection whatsoever. It's nothing more than an iPod on shuffle play.

It's an attempt to answer the satellite radio model, only not as focused and with play lists not nearly as deep or wide. Of course, it's also profitable to the station owners, and whether it's Clear Channel or "Monticello Media" there's still a corporate overlord approving every single electron that leaves the station.

There's nothing "different" about any of these formats. It's unimaginative radio primarily for people for whom music is a very low priority - they usually don't even announce what songs they just played, so it's not even a boost to the music industry. There are a lot of people out there for whom music is a very low priority, so these stations aren't going anywhere, I'm afraid. But as satellite continues to gain a foothold (the SIRIUS-XM merger will continue the process) these stations will lose ground to formats that are genuinely local (sorry - having a music server in town doesn't make the station "local" any more than having Kidd Kraddick do a local promo does). That will be what saves terrestrial radio - being a local connector for people, NOT being a virtual iPod.

HURRAY.....they took that stupid Kidd Kraddick stuff off the air...and
the ever-annoying "Who's on Your Heart" Delilah. I'm sure the listeners
who want to hear about eating hamsters (Kraddick) or the relationship-
challenged (Delilah)can find those programs on some other stations.
Those of us who want to listen to MUSIC can now do so without having to
come up with plan B for 6-1030 am or 7-11pm. HURRAY.HURRAY. HURRAY

Music Lover, if they all have different addresses, the only thing I can say is... all the lonely people, where do they all come from? I guess I'm a sour puss because I wake up to BBC radio and the tragedy of the day.

Bring back Kidd and the gang! What were you thinking? (obviously you weren't!) I will never tune to 107.5 until Kidd is back.

I miss Kid Kraddick --- can't you keep him on in the mornings and still have the great mix of music with Tom the rest of the time? I don't bother to turn on the radio in the mornings now (except to see if Kid Kraddick is back on the air....)

Tom??? NO. Bye

For the love of Pete, if cvilles world ends because of no kidd, then bring him back. Im glad your priorities are so in line

I, too, LOVE the Kidd Kraddick show and miss it terribly. I moved to VA from NJ about a year ago and had to find all new stations to listen to. I travel 40 miles to work every morning and just ADORE the Kidd Kraddick show. I have never laughed so hard listening to a radio station in my life! I've been wondering what has been going on and why my preset station 107.5 isn't playing Kidd and the crew. Now I know. How sad. If there is anyway possible to get Kidd's show back, I'm all for it. Missing the show terribly!

WTH? Here we go again. It hasn't been all that long since Kidd was pulled from the format here in Charlottesville and we had to wait for him to be added back. I won't be listening to 107.5 without him and will be forced to forgo humor on my commute in exchange for news on NPR. Bad call 107.5!

Sam, er, Liberty, er Tom. Yeah, really novel. Well, you're off my preset in the car, and I'm switching back to sports talk 1400. Kidd Kraddick brought class to Charlottesville radio. His charity work was honorable, and I believe he received the award for broadcaster, show of the year. So, yeah let's get rid of this guy. GENIUS!!!!! I hope advertisers boycot your station.

Sorry to say but I agree with the masses. I loved Kidd Kraddick in the morning. It was something both me and my kids could listen and laugh along with. My 5yr old daughter does the best Kensey impression, "J.C. What the Hell?".
I have gone back to satellite radio for my commute into work where I quickly load the Kidd live page so I can at least listen to them for a bit. I also agree that the BGB blows since Rick left, sorry Highway. I plan to submit my comment to the Kidd live website and hopefully some other station will pick them up. By the way this station is no different than Sam, plays the same stuff...dime a dozen.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE bring Kidd Kraddock back on the air!!!!!!!!...He and his crew were the best thing on morning radio!...I won't listen to 107.5 until Kidd is back on the air!!!!!!!!

I thought something was a little fishy when they were playing Celine Dion right after Kidd talked about Kanye West and 50Cent! I too protest 107.5 until they bring back Kidd. Maybe another station will pick him up (101.9? or 106.1?)!

Tom 107.5 sounds like an exact rip-off of Sam 105.5 (WOJL Louisa/Orange). On the other hand, that's the only commercial station I listen to, and I totally love it, so apparently it's a market model that's working. Wonder if there will be room for two in the area with the same format?

Thanks for listening to Tom 107.5. We're not an exact rip-off of anything. Stay tuned. You'll love it.

I find it interesting how silent George Reed has been after all these Kidd Kraddick comments have popped up. Guilty conscience? BRING BACK KIDD KRADDICK! I am so tired of hearing "Tom" every 42 seconds on the station now.

I, and it seems a lot of other C'villians, will not be listening to your station unless Kidd Kraddick and gang are brought back. If Tom really wants to do only as the listeners want....bring them back!!!! You can have the rest of the day on IPod shuffle but for all of our Morning commutes we WANT to hear Kidd! It is the ONLY morning show that is not foul or disgusting so my kids can listen. And they are apart of our lives! Can you, TOM, not tell by the way we have all written to the first site we could find to VOICE our opinion! Can anyone out there who is more computer/website savvy start an online petition to boycott [email protected] until Kidd Kraddick is returned to his loyal listener?

Loyal to Kidd and Gang in C'ville!

Love the "anything anytime" format, but really want Kidd Kraddock in the Morning back. Why did you have to drop them from the format. I think you'll surely upset a lot of listeners.

I agree TOTALLY with Bina. Why did you have to take Kidd Kraddick in the morning off this station? You could've changed the format and still left them on. You have upset alot of listeners and I for one won't listen to TOM because you kicked off Kidd!!!!!!!!!!

HUGE DEVELOPMENT

Okay go to www.kiddlive.com and see the home page... Kidd has posted this

Charlottesville VA Loses Kidd
Are you a listener in C-Town upset that Kidd's been cancelled? Write your thoughts to , and please title the email "Charlottesville Listener." We'll do our best to get another station in town to pick up the show!

I like the music in the new format, but was very upset when I was drivind to work and there was no Kidd Kraddock in the Morning. I love that show its about the only thing I listen to on the Radio and for you guys to drop that show is outrageous. There was also no warning that this show will not be on anymore, I listened to it as early as Friday morning and then all of a sudden its gone. I cannot believe you guys would allow this show to be dropped, whoever is planning these stations needs to re think their strategy because they are going to lose most of their follower's. So my suggestion is if you are smart bring the show back, it makes the station more personable there is no life in TOM and that's kind of sad. So I advise you to please bring back Kidd and the crew.

I prefer music to a lot of hot air.

Can you spell trainwreck. I can TOM 107.9

Bring back KIDD ! ! ! 107.5 WAS the only station I listened to consistently, now I must find somewhere else. Not simply becasue KIDD is no longer there; I do not mind the variety of music being played now. I do however, mind the fact that there was not ANY notice given. By not even letting the consumer know ahead of time about the change, shows there must have been some fear of the backlash. I cannot respect a radio station that has no respect for their customers. And if I cannot respect the station, I cannot listen to it. Hopefully another station in the area will have enough sense to pick up KIDD and increase their ratings.

I like the new TOM. Kidd was fun too but I don't miss it. Delilah was a hoot but I don't miss her either. I like the lack of commentary and commercials. The music is a good mix for at the office.
I kind-of have to laugh at how childish people sound who are whining for their little Kiddy-poo. Just listen on-line of it was such a big part of your day. With the semi-monopoly of ClearChannelRadio, so many stations suck anyway now-a-days. NPR and NRN are good but not really consistent with the good music. It's sort-of pathetic. But please stop whining about it.

This is interesting. I don't think I can recall ever seeing a blog with so many commentators identifying themselves by just their first names, and amazingly everybody has the same point of view. I wonder if the good people at the Hook would be willing to check IP addresses to see if their might be some sockpuppet chicanery at play here.

Kidd was the start of my day and when I noticed it was no longer airing, I though surely they did not change morning shows. I will not listen to you radio station in the morning or any other time until Kidd is brought back. I will listen to the Big Greasy Breakfast simply because Kidd is not available. Kidd was a pleasant way to start the day and my mornings are not the same without his show. I truly do not know why a station would not continue to air a show that has numerous listeners that are loyal to the show. Think again before making such a critical mistake. Bring him back and all will be well.

I agree with you Cville Eye, however, that's not what I was talking about. There's a big difference between "hot air" and true broadcast entertainment. There's devises like CD changers and IPODS for folks who just want music only, and with these you can choose what you want to listen to rather than be force fed the same stale songs over and over. Today's youth doesn't have radio that those of us who grew up in the 60s, 70s and 80s did. They've missed out.

107.5 is no longer the radio station that wakes me up in the morning and no longer is a preset option on the radio in my vehicle. The 'new' format is not anything new but Kidd Kraddick was something we couldn't get anywhere else in this area. Not only did they provide many laughs (which is a benefit to your health and well being) but also the good charity work they do with Kidd's Kids. Why would such a positive force be taken away? Bad decision. I hope you feel the pinch and bring back Kidd.

I'm sick and tired of the delusional thinking, of the various owners of 107.5. Any of them who honestly believe that they can do well without Kidd Kraddick in the morning are (forgive the pun) Kidding themselves. I've stopped listening before because the show was dropped and I guess I'll do it again.

I also will not be listening to 107.5 until they bring back Kidd Kraddock. There is no longer a good morning radio show in Cville. BGB sucks since Rick left and now there is nothing. I will listen to Kidd on line after getting to work.

I told you there would be A LOT of people upset that Kidd Kraddock has been dropped. And seriously, Music Lover, do you think any one person has enough time let alone the desire to pretend to be different people to start some sort of campaign? Get real! I hope a local station sees the following the show has here in Charlottesville and chooses to pick it up in their morning line-up. Come on "Tom", you'd better jump on this before another station does and you lose most of your morning listeners.

I included my last name so you will all know there are many people out there who miss Kidd Kraddick.I don't normally like talk radio but love this one and listen not when I wake up in the morning but on my way to work.It makes me laugh and takes my mind off the day ahead and the 30 minute drive I have. Please bring them back! I find the station boring now the same music so far as SAM. I have removed 107.5 also and will stick w/106.1 & 91.9.

BRING BACK KIDD KRADDICK IN THE MORNING! I will not listen to the stupid Tom station (the selections SUCK!) Bring back the real Mix 107.5 and learn from your mistakes Monticello Media. Clear Channel may have had it's problems, but 107.5 sure was a better station when a Clear Channel station!

I don't typically like to get on "band-wagons" or join "mob thought" but I did have to make a call this morning to 107.5. Once I'm at work, I listen to Kidd online, but I do enjoy getting that extra thirty minutes in on the ride to work. And because I'm not typically a channel changer, 107.5 was my main station of choice whenever I was in my car (and in two years, I've driven nearly 70k miles). No more Kidd, no more 107.5 for me!

I could not believe when I hopped in my car this morning with my teenage daughter and turned on the radio to find that Kidd was gone! I look forward to Kidd in the mornings - it's a way that my daughter and I can spend a few minutes laughing as we each go our way for the day. If I wanted to listen to this non-genre, I would (and have) listen to SAM 105.5 FM. Kidd was a great way to transition into my morning at work, and now that's gone! I will not be tuning in until Kidd's return.

I'm guessing that Kidd was removed because he seems to be a feature on Clear Channel (www.clearchannel.com) radio stations and a different company (Monticello Media) bought stations in the area from Clear Channel recently... so maybe Monticello didn't want to pay what would likely be considerably higher costs to carry Kidd...

Okay, seriously Mr. Reed... bring back Kidd!! Please. I have never felt so distraut as when I turned on my radio to find no Kidd, no Kelly or crew... come on. My entire office building listens to them and TOM will not get our ears back until Kidd returns. Kidd! Kidd! Kidd!

Kidd gone? NO WAY!!! My friend got me hooked and now you take it away. I can not believe that a show that did so well can be removed without warning. I will not be tuning in to TOM or anything else on 107.5 unless Kidd returns.

TOM in and Kidd out!!! NO WAY - Bring back Kidd Kraddick in the morning!

I went to the stupid TOM website, but I don't see a way to e-mail them. I hope George or whomever is reading these comments. I would also like to add that I love 106.1 and think they do a great job selecting the music, it's not just a random ipod experience.

What? No more Kidd Kraddick in the morning? You have got to be "kidding" me! What a way to start my Monday morning..listening to "Tom"!!! Please bring back Kidd! Then after Kidd, Tom can play whatever he wants!
Thanks.

Bring back Kidd!!! Like everyone else I will NOT be listening unless you bring him back! Thank god I can listen to Kidd online!

I have enjoyed listening to KIDD on my way to work over the past year and watching how they joke with eachother and draw us into their lives. Around the office we have enjoyed talking about what we would hear on the way to work and now that has come to an end. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?????!!!!!!!!! You may think you are making things better but your not. We still enjoy listening to a real person and what they think and feel about everyday life. No offense "Tom" but you just are not going to cut it around here. So farewell until Kidd comes back.

My wife got me to switch from the local country stations to listen to Mix 107.5. I bucked at first, but soon started liking the mix. I also like the mix on your new format, "Tom". However, the best thing about the old format was Kidd Kraddick in the morning. Why did you have to take him off? Can't Tom do what he needs to do AFTER Kidd Kraddick in the morning?

I was so upset this morning I mean if Mondays are bad enough I have to start it with "Tom" instead of Kidd. Come on. I agree with everyone else here I will not be listening until Kidd returns to our airways. 107.5 will never be the same. It is a sad day in Virginia.

I cannot believe Kidd Kraddick has been taken off the air in Central Virginia! I do not want to listen to "Tom" while getting ready for work or driving to work in the mornings! What are you thinking? Please bring him back!

VERY peeved that 107.5 dropped Kidd Kraddock - I refuse to give this station a chance until they bring the show back. Howdya like that, Tom?

¢Ã¢â??¬Ã?â??Tom may play a U2 song, followed by the Bee Gees, then Matchbox 20, Lou Rawls, Def Leppard, Madonna, Nickelback, then Earth Wind & Fire.¢Ã¢â??¬

¢Ã¢â??¬Ã?â??Tom may play a U2 song, followed by the Bee Gees, then Matchbox 20, Lou Rawls, Def Leppard, Madonna, Nickelback, then Earth Wind & Fire.¢Ã¢â??¬

Tom will never see my ears anywhere close to his station.

I could not believe my ears this morning when I did not hear Kidd. I kept wondering what was going on. Then I learn about the change. KIDD is gone. NOOOOO. Well I changed the station and will not turn it back to 107.5 until Kidd returns I will encourage all of my friends and family to do the same. I am very disappointed in your decision and hope that you realize what a mistake this was.

I was rather upset this morning to learn that Kidd Kraddick was no longer being played on 107.5. This show has a huge following and I find it a poor decision to no longer air the show. I will not listen to TOM until the show returns. Very disappointed about this...

I, too, have taken 107.5 off my radio pre-set button. The only good thing that station had was Kidd in the morning. Now I'm back to XM on my commute and streaming Kidd online once I get to work. "Tom" is the most annoying thing I have ever heard.

TOM is no different than SAM.

Bring back Kidd.

I'm not listening to 107.5 until he's back.

C'mon J.E.M. YOu gotta be workin' there. Give us a break. Tom sux

So, I do like the mix that "Tom" plays and I'm generally pleased with the other Monticello Media stations, but I'm not so keen on there being no more Kidd Kraddick. I mean, c'mon! That was the best thing on 107.5. I listened every morning to Kidd. They just keep taking Kidd away. I remember in like 2003 when Mix 107.5 changed to that strange jazz station. I was very confused when all of a sudden it went from Kidd to smooth Jazz. Then we got Kidd back, and now he's gone again.

And in response to J.E.M., It's kind of hard to listen to Kidd online when you're on your in the car and on your way to work. In reguards to "Tom" as a radio station, I'm suprised you gave a radio station such a personal name, when it has no personality. Yes the music is good and there are few commercials, but that's it! I could set my own iTunes library on party shuffle and get the same thing. Seems kind of lazy that you don't actually have somebody there announcing the songs and taking requests and such. Just a programmer who comes in for four hours and selects the order of songs and advertisements for the week. Plus naming a radio station like it were a person seems a bit egotistical. I actually thought Tom was a real guy and I thought "Jeez this guy is just full of himself. He even talks about himself in the third person." It was a bit strange. Either way, the station is good, but needs some changes, starting with Kidd and continuing with developing something the listeners can identify with such as a DJ.
