Shad v. drinking water

I was astonished to read that there is a proposal to destroy the nearly 200-year-old dam at the Woolen Mills ["Dam demo: Breach at Woolen Mills good for shad," News, March 30]. If anything qualifies for historic preservation, it should be this fine old dam.

Furthermore, the thesis about the shad coming up the river would also require the removal of the larger dam a couple of miles upstream at US 29. This would present citizens with a choice between shad and drinking water, inasmuch as it would require the destruction of the reservoir.
