PHOTOPHILE- Batter up: When flapjacks flip for a good cause

Life is sweet everyday on the Lawn, but the treakle factor rose significantly Saturday morning, October 14, as syrup and jelly were featured offerings at the third annual Pancakes for Parkinson's fundraiser.

UVA student volunteers served up OJ and coffee and staffed the griddles for the breakfast that aimed to raise $50,000 to combat the insidious disease. In its first two years, the group has raised $25,000 for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.

People in line for the tasty flapjacks included Muhammad Ali, Janet Reno, and Michael J Fox– or the next best thing, as folks were asked to dress as their favorite celebrity with Parkinson's. ACAC brought a moon-bounce for kiddies (presumably to use before filling up with the sugary delights) and several attendees burst into song.

Volunteers laid in enough ingredients to whip up 8,000 pancakes, and they hoped to serve at least 6,000. Not surprisingly, the chocolate chip models were the biggest hit. People who missed the fun can still make a contribution at pancakesforparkinsons.org.
