NEWS- Mayhem on Fairway: Details emerge in city shooting

A week after a shooting on Fairway Avenue, one victim is dead, three suspects are in custody, and many questions remain– not just about the shooting, but about the suspects' alleged crime spree that preceded it.

At around 2:45pm on Tuesday, April 8, shots rang out as a white Dodge minivan careered down Fairview Avenue toward Meade Avenue and crashed into a chainlink fence. Three victims in the van were taken to UVA Medical Center– two with gunshot wounds, one with an injured foot. Two were released that day; the third, 29-year-old Shawn Anthony Luck, died of his wounds on Saturday.

Although a witness believed the shots were fired from another car, on Tuesday April 15, police contradicted that account. The shooting, they said, had taken place inside the van, and the car seen by the witness had been identified and excluded as the source of the shots.

 According to Charlottesville Police Sgt. Mark Brake, the other van victims– 28-year-old Curtis Tyrell Montague of Richmond and 27-year-old Jada Marie Dubrose Dickerson– were also the culprits. The third alleged culprit, 22-year-old Candace Marie Williams, was uninjured in the incident. She, along with Montague and Dickerson, has been charged with first degree murder, use of a firearm in commission of a murder, and robbery. 

Although Brake won't identify the actual shooter or the individuals' locations in the van, the charges may contain a clue: Montague alone has been charged with possession of a firearm as a felon.

As police combed the woods and yards along Fairview the afternoon of the shooting, they discovered that firearm– a chrome revolver with a wooden handle– in a mulch pile on the south side of the road about 100 yards from where the van crashed. That discovery, coupled with other evidence, according to Brake, allowed Charlottesville police to issue arrest warrants for all three. Montague and Williams were arrested at Montague's Henrico County home on Sunday, April 13; Dickerson was arrested the same day in Charlottesville.

In addition to the charges stemming from the shooting and robbery, all three face multiple charges relating to an armed robbery and abduction in the 700 block of Ridge Street near Lankford Avenue on the morning of April 8, hours before the Fairway shooting. Brake says police don't believe Luck was involved in the crimes.

Montague and Williams appeared in Charlottesville District Court on Wednesday, April 16 for a bond hearing (after this paper's deadline). Dickerson's first hearing is scheduled for May 1 at 1pm in Charlottesville District Court.
