There's pomp and circumstance at many weddings– big white gowns, tuxedos, white gloves, even a horse-drawn carriage or a Bentley. But as these candid photos show, even the fanciest of affairs feature moments of unexpected levity.

If this is the knife, who wants to see the fork?! This military groom, says Daly, made sure the wedding cake was cut with style, using an antique sword. Fortunately, Daly says, that was the toughest battle he fought all day.

Some couples like sports. And some couples really like sports. Such was the case at a recent wedding Walker shot at the Main Street train station in Richmond. Following the ceremony, the wedding party made their way up the historic station staircase as guests waited at the top. As the bride and groom ascended, the groom's buddies suddenly went into action.
"They rolled out this banner for the couple to run through," says Walker, and the newlyweds appeared just like a football team entering the field. "Everyone was hooting and hollering."

Boys will be boys. And sometimes big boys will be little boys. Kalin Scharnbeck was taking wedding pictures outside a church before the ceremony when the groomsmen suddenly regressed. Spotting a nearby playground, the decorated military men dashed over and got to work making a sand castle.
"They were just being so goofy," says Scharnbeck. "I though they were pretty brave to be playing around in white uniforms before the wedding!"

No, that bridesmaid's face isn't covered with tears of joy– it's covered with wine spilled during an excited surprise hug from a very happy guest.
"The girl in the middle didn't yet know her gleeful greeting had resulted in a spill," says Scharnbeck, who explains that the photo was taken late in the reception and that the three pals shared a big laugh after the photo was shot.

As the groom closed the door on bachelorhood, these bachelors had to climb a door to fetch the bride's wildly tossed garter, which had snagged on a ledge above.
Although they worked together, one man clearly came out on top with the traditional lucky prediction of being the next to wed.

The exchange of rings is one of the most tender and significant moments in the wedding ceremony, but for this poor groom, it was also the funniest.
"He fumbled and dropped the ring," says Bill Holland, of the priceless expression on the bride's face as her soon-to-be-husband scrambled around to find it.
"Everyone laughed," says Holland, "but luckily the couple both have great senses of humor."

This wedding may have been one of the safest ever held– thanks to a policy at the ITC and Reagan Building that requires everyone who comes in to pass through a metal detector. Everyone made it through, says Bill Holland, except the most important person: the bride. "The comb on her veil set off the detector," he says, "which brought lots of laughs from friends and family waiting to go through."

Crazy hats spark crazy dancing! Thanks to a DJ at this reception who came prepared with props for everyone, the mood went from light to airborn in minutes as two male guests mimicked Fred and Ginger to onlookers' delight. "They were just being nutty," laughs Fariello.
