ANNUAL MANUAL- Outings: Shopping

It used to be that hardcore shoppers had to hit the road to get any satisfaction. Well, those days are over now that Charlottesville has more "shopportunities" than ever before. Whether you prefer chic boutiques, thrifty finds, or the wonder that is Target, all you need is your wallet and an urge to spend.

The Corner: From flirty frocks at Duo to fleet footwear at Ragged Mountain Running Shop to apparel and gear from UVA sports paraphernalia shop Mincer's, there's something for everyone.

Downtown Mall: Charlottesville's historic downtown mall is the place to stroll, stop for a bite, soak up Charlottesville's relaxed atmosphere. Check out Spring Street, Elsie Garden or Eloise for women's apparel and get the kiddies looking sharp at the newly expanded Petit Bebe at the corner of First and Water Streets. For funky and a bit more affordable (new and vintage) women's wear, check out Bittersweet two blocks south of the Mall.

Barracks Road Shopping Center: The place to go for the Banana Republic/Old Navy/Barnes & Noble fix.

Seminole Square Shopping Center: Draws discount fans with Marshall's and Big Lots.

Charlottesville Fashion Square: The region's only indoor mall unveiled its swanky $8.5 million renovation five years ago and houses J. Crew, Abercrombie and Fitch, and other mall regulars. Other big shopping plexes include Rio Hill (T. J. Maxx), Albemarle Square (Circuit City), and on the town's east side, Pantops Shopping Center (Rose's, Radio Shack).

Hollymead Town Center: Complex on 29N opened three years ago and is best known for its biggest tenant, Target.

World Market: Located on Emmet Street by Best Buy.

West of town: Shopping's scattered as you head west, but if you're taking the scenic ride out 250 toward Crozet, there are a few places to stop and shop along the way: pick up dinner fixings at Foods of All Nations, stationery at The Lime Tree. Coming soon: a Harris Teeter and other stores in the new Blue Ridge Shopping Center next to Blue Ridge Building Supply in Crozet.
