LETTER- Rehab coulda saved money, history

[Re: "Sliced: Endowment losses cut Jefferson Scholarships," January 22]:

I am a Jefferson Scholar from 1971 when the program was not so well endowed. I believe I got $1,500 over two years.

The razing of the Bradbury home to build the foundation's new center was a serious mistake. Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credits would have been used to return 45 percent of the cost from the governments of Virginia and the USA.

The cost would have been dramatically affected, and Charlottesville would still have a very important part of its historic patrimony in play. It is yet another example of a sadly missed opportunity.
