Really green: Log home master teaches his craft
What could be greener than building with trees and rocks? The man who is considered one of the world's top experts in stone and hewn-log construction is about to unleash some week-long workshops this year.
He is Charles McRaven, and he kicks off his teaching season April 20 with a hewn cabin class at his family's farm in Free Union.
"He has the kind of skills that an early American would have," says two-time McRaven stone student Mary Lowery of Nellysford. "If you were a pioneer and you just got off the boat and got a plot of land, McRaven is the guy."
Such expertise requires a week-long investment of time– 9 to 5 daily– plus an investment of $750.
"It's 40 hours of instruction plus all the gatorade and water they can drink," says McRaven's wife Linda. "They leave exhausted and full of information."
