QUESTION OF THE WEEK- What's the best concert you've seen in Charlottesville?

Andrew Hart: "Probably the Flaming Lips because of the spectacle, the spectacular oracular..."

Frankie Boldee: "Shabba Ranks at Trax back in the '80s."

Chris Friedman: "Among the only, the Rolling Stones concert."

Guitarist James "Blood" Ulmer Trax early-mid 90's. Rashied Ali on drums, and a bassist whose name I don't recall. Sax player George Adam didn't make it until the second set. For the first set, less then 100 lucky C'ville music fans were blown away by the best power trio ever to take the stage in this sleepy little town. If I recall correctly, they were able to pack everything they need into few than a half-dozen semi-trucks... Funny how much better the music scene was back in the "sleepy little town" days.

One of 3 in the late 1980s: a) Harold Faulkner and Boyd Tinsley's combo "Down Boy Down" at Durty Nelly's, b) Fishbone at Trax, or c) fIREHOSE at Trax.

Village People at Mem Gym.

Danny Gatton @ Trax

That would be the Fabulous Thunderbirds at the Mine Shaft, 1981. Or maybe the Four Tops at U-Hall, 1976.

That would have to be Clapton/Cray/Trucks at JPJ.

Or Flaming Lips, Stones or some old DMB Trax shows

Squirrel Nut Zippers at Trax

King Sunny Ade at the Old Gym, Big Joe Turner at TRAX or Neville Brothers at the Mine Shaft

All these in '80s/early '90s:

Meat Puppets at Trax. Phish at Trax. Neville Bros. at Trax. Indecision, Halloween at old Mineshaft. Danny Gatton at C & O. Terrence Simien & the Mallet Playboys at C & O.

Tim Reynolds/TR3 at Sigma Nu.

The Pixies, Meat Puppets, Dead Kennedys, The Chills-- all at Trax. Alex Chilton at the C&O downstairs. Too many Tokyo Rose shows to mention.

We used to get great alternative music here in Cville!

Either SCoTS at TRAX or the Rugburns at TRAX back in the mid to late 90's... seems like a growing theme. TRAX was where the music was at!

The Seldom Scene at the Mineshaft, The New Grass Revival at the C&O, or John McCutcheon at First Night Virginia

The Band at U Hall a few weeks before the Last Waltz ('76).

Loved the days (okay, nights) of Skip, The Allstars and The Casuals at The West Virginian.

And Tom's right - the King Sunny show was big fun.

That would be: Skip at the Mineshaft in the early 80's, B-52's at the Pavilion, David Byrne at the Pavilion, Stones at Scott Stadium, Tuesday nights with DMB at Trax, Bo Diddley and BB King at the Paramount, SCOTS anywhere, Donna the Buffalo at Starr Hill, Down Boy Down at Blue Ridge Brewery and Eastern Standard, Big Country at Mem Gym!
