Worst tragedy at UVA: Three weeks before graduation, Yeardley Love, 22, a senior on the number five-ranked women's lacrosse team, is murdered in her apartment on 14th Street and her former boyfriend, George Huguely, a senior on the men's number one-ranked lacrosse team, is charged May 3 in her slaying.
Latest in Mumbai tragedy: Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, the only surviving shooter in the November 2008 massacre in which 166 people were killed, including two from Nelson County, is found guilty in an Indian court of murder and waging war. Synchronicity official Alan Scherr and his daughter, Naomi, were among those killed.
Latest version of the Twinkie Defense, courtesy cvillenews: Ralph Leon Jackson, the man accused of murdering DJ Tim Davis and trying to kill Christina Floyd on the Blue Ridge Parkway April 5, tells investigators that he was taking "male enhancement pills" i.e. snake oil that made him "fuzzy." Best solo performance in a courtroom: The former Western Albemarle teen accused of threatening to kill schoolmates on Facebook plays the violin in Albemarle Circuit Court April 29 so Judge Cheryl Higgins can determine whether Patrick Crider had a connection to a member of her family who described the man as playing the violin extremely well, Tasha Kates reports in the Daily Progress. After the performance, Higgins recused herself from sentencing Crider and his case will be heard May 5 by Judge Paul Peatross.
Longest sexual assault sentence: Timothy James Hoffman, 25, gets 24 years April 27 for unlawful filming and object penetration of his then fiancee, according to another Kates' story.
Worst findings on Dark Hollow Road: Nelson County couple Calvin Darrell Campbell and Dinah V. Campbell are found dead April 28 in what authorities call a murder-suicide.
Worst alleged tow job: Cavalier Wrecking Services faces charges of grand larceny and selling stolen property, according to the Newsplex. The Department of Motor Vehicles is pressing charges because a driver allegedly towed a car from Southwood Mobile Home Park without notifying the owner and sold the car to a demolisher without the proper paperwork. The trial date is June 1.
Worst time to check the mail: Albemarle County and Charlottesville property and real estate tax bills have gone out, and are due June 5.
Most sanctioned: Kappa Sigma fraternity is sanctioned by its national organization for inappropriate activities with pledges, the Cavalier Daily reports. In 2001, the local chapter sued the national group over ownership of the frat house then located on Ivy Road and lost in 2004.
Most no-shows: Charlottesville Planning Commission hosts a sparsely attended workshop April 27 following an earlier April 12 event that residents avoided, reports Charlottesville Tomorrow.
