PHOTOPHILE- Smooth sailing: Sperry Marine celebrates 50 years

Everybody calls it Sperry Marine, the sprawling brick complex across from the Post Office on 29N, but in fact the place is now owned by Northrop Grumman, a global defense company headquartered in Los Angeles.

But on Thursday, October 19, names weren't what mattered, as Northrop's Sperry Marine business unit celebrated 50 years in Charlottesville with a party and demonstrations of community appreciation. 

The party drew some big names: Virginia Delegate David Toscano, U.S. Representative Virgil Goode, Rear Admiral Samuel Locklear III, who all expressed thanks for Sperry Marine's work in protecting America's troops and providing interesting jobs for citizens in Charlottesville and Albemarle County.

CEO John DeMaso indicated in prepared remarks that it is just those employees who have made the company successful in its first half century. "Twenty-five percent of our Charlottesville employees have been with the company for over 25 years," DeMaso said. "Thirty percent have 20 plus years, and 50 percent have been with us more than 10 years."  

Another happy attendee was PVCC President Frank Friedman, who was the recipient of a $10,000 check from Northrop. (The American Heart Association took home one for $16,357.)
