Slaughter Recognized with "Terra Incognita": Second Street Gallery and Les Yeux du Monde put their walls together in March and April for an extensive two-gallery retrospective of Belgian-born local artist Anne Slaughter's 40 years of visual reflection through painting, mixed-media and sculpture.

Artini's Arty Party: Sponsored by Absolut Vodka to benefit nonprofit Second Street Gallery, Artini has local restaurants vying to mix the tastiest, most visually stimulating martini (think plastic sharks and orchids), each served on a collectible coaster designed by one of nine local artists, including Mike Fitts, Russell Richards, Sharon Shapiro, and Steve Taylor. The dizzying competition culminates in a not-to-be-missed bash at the Ix Building, where art lovers get shaken and stirred by both the music and a spectacular late-June lightning storm.

Weird and Wonderful "Charlottesville Wunderkammer": A collaborative effort of the Zen Monkey Project, the Performers Exchange Project, and the Lunatic Carnival, this darkly humorous extravaganza of performance art transforms the dilapidated Ix Building into an installation piece featuring kinetic sculpture, furniture-crawling aerialists, tap-dancing vampires, and fur-clad fire dancers. It becomes the hot spot– literally– to swill a cold one for three weeks in July and August.
Take it to The Bridge: During 2006, the Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative, under the guidance of visionary founders Greg Kelly and Zack Worrell, begins making its community-focused art dreams a reality by sponsoring events ranging from Johnny Fogg's "Mother-Father" project to two film series to Asha Greer's tea ceremony and art exhibit.

Citywide "Complicit!"-y: Using her book, Sweet Dreams: Contemporary Art and Complicity as a springboard, author, artist, and UVA media studies professor Johanna Drucker curates "Complicit!," an eye-popping overview of recent pop culture-inspired art. While the star-studded main exhibition lights up the University of Virginia Art Museum, satellite shows "Complicit Codex!" at Les Yeux du Monde and "Anna Gaskell: Everything that Rises" shine downtown during September.
