NEWS- Craig lists: Third candidate seeks sheriff job

Albemarle Master Deputy Roger Craig became the third candidate and second Democrat to announce a run for Albemarle Sheriff Ed Robb's soon-to-be vacant position. Robb is not seeking a third term as sheriff.

So far in what's become a crowded field to keep order in the court and haul prisoners around, Charlottesville police Captain Chip Harding is running as a Republican, and Albemarle Master Police Officer Larry Claytor is making his third run as a Democrat, having been previously unsuccessful running as a Republican and independent.

"Roger is the only Democrat running for the Democratic nomination," says former Albemarle supervisor Charles Martin, who introduced Craig at his February 27 official announcement.

Craig, 56, previously was a Charlottesville cop and rode in the city's now-defunct mounted patrol. He's worked for the Sheriff's Office for the past 15 years.

Roger Craig wants to be the Democratic candidate for sheriff, "the party of Mark Warner, and Tim Kaine, and Jim Webb," he says at his February 27 kickoff.
