Slice cuts in

Look out, local pizza makers! Vinny Mastellone is gunning for you.

The restaurateur known for running Vinny's across from Albemarle High School (and for owning Greene County's oldest running restaurant, Vinny's Pizza & Pasta in Ruckersville, which began making New York-style pies 23 years ago) has taken over the former Rise Pizzworks space in the Barracks Road Shopping Center.

It's called Slice, opened March 28 by word of mouth, and it hopes to give the folks at Christian's Pizza a run for their money.

"We have gourmet pizza like Christians," says Mastellone, "but we have a less hard, more pliable crust. People have been saying it's awesome, and saying things like 'Look out, Christians!'"

Mastellone says Slice also offers sandwiches and salads, beer and wine, with most of the ingredients sourced locally. Still, he wants the Big Apple to shine through.

"I'm from New York," says Mastellone in an unmistakable accent, "and this is real New York pizza."
