Black Sheep sweets

Baa, baa, Black Sheep, have you any whoopie pies? There’s a new bakery in town promising to "take traditional baked goods to a new level.” Black Sheep Bakery has begun delivering homemade treats to the Charlottesville and Albemarle County area, slowly satisfying Central Virginia’s collective sweet tooth.

"I missed baking," says owner Sara Teaster, a second-year Master's student in UVA's Urban and Environmental Planning department, and this year's UVA student garden manager. "This is a new fun concept, and I'm excited about it. I love food and cooking for people."

From traditional whoopie pies to “More Than 7 Layer” bars, Black Sheep offers an impressively extensive menu of handcrafted confections. Chocolate zucchini, orange cardamom, and almond lavender are just a few of the 29 (!) varieties of cupcakes available for any and all in need of a frosting fix. Cupcakes not your thing? (What’s wrong with you?) Try one of the 35 varieties of macaroons, from double lemon to peanut butter/jelly to strawberry rhubarb.

"We're looking for a permanent home, and once we get established, we hope to give back as much as possible by using locally sourced ingredients," says Teaster, who hopes to be donating a portion of her proceeds to buy sheep for start-up farms through Heifer International.

Black Sheep also caters wholesale to retail and food service businesses— as well as any dinner hostess in distress. Not enough time to slow-roast the chicken and make dessert for your next event? Black Sheep Bakery can deliver what you need, right to your door— perfect for anyone in need of a sugar rush-ed.

But you don't have to take our word for it. You can indulge your every dessert fantasy at 434-227-6264 or .

Decide for yourself if those delectables really are the “Best Ever Brownies.”

Notes: By the time this story ran, Teaster graduated from graduate school. Also, the photo didn't run in the paper; it's an online bonus!
