NEWS- Coming home: Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster

The subject of The Hook's September 11 cover story ["George's monster: Nearly 40 years later, Garrett looks back on his beast"] has come to Clemons. UVA is finally getting a copy of Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster.

 "I was sort of presented with a bit of a challenge," says Erika Day, the librarian in charge of purchasing Clemons' videos, "to see if I could track this thing down."

Day says that after reading the story, she decided to try to locate what is easily the most maligned film ever to involve a UVA professor. Garrett, the film's screenwriter, has moved forward in literary circles since crafting this anti-masterpiece in the early 1960s.

"I'm terribly worried," says Garrett, "that if it's in the library and people have ready access to it, they will break the code of its subtle allegory, and I will be in trouble."

Bad news for Garrett. The VHS tape arrived last week, which means card-carrying library patrons can see the picture– gratis– in their own home theaters. The story doesn't end there.

"I would really like to get in touch with whoever has the public performance rights for this thing," says Day, "so that we can have a screening of it."

That can be arranged. Sorry, George.
