Gutted: Student hurt in morning blaze

The early morning fire that gutted this three-level UVA-area house sent one student to the hospital with burns and smoke inhalation and left him and his 11 fellow residents homeless. According to Battalion Chief Steve Walton, the first crews arriving at 5:47am on Tuesday, February 10, found flames already emerging from the three-level Monroe Avenue structure. Walton says the fire began in the left-front room downstairs, the burned student's bedroom. Three other residents received minor injuries, including at least one in a dive from a window, Walton says. An investigation into the cause was pending at press time.
