BAR overturned: New door allowed here

"We sure did argue a lot for a unanimous decision," says City Councilor Blake Caravati, as he and fellow councilors overturn a November decision by the Board of Architectural Review. The April 5 Council vote allows developer Gabe Silverman to replace a window with a door, so Asian Express restaurant can access a planned outdoor deck.

Councilors noted that the antebellum brick house at 909 W. Main Street had already been drastically changed over the years, most recently by two B.A.R.-approved decisions in October 2002, one allowing widening the front steps to span the entire front porch, the other a narrow approval of larger openings on the first floor. The building also houses Big Mouth Pizza and two apartments. –Hawes Spencer
