Church + state= culture shock

Thanks for the cover story about Bible Schools in Waynesboro [May 27: "They break for Jesus"].

I moved to Charlottesville seven years ago and taught high school in Waynesboro for two years.

While it was already a huge culture shock after teaching in Boston, it absolutely blew me away how much religion was part of a so-called public school. When I questioned the large Christian prayer printed on the cafeteria wall or the paintings of three crosses on the ceiling of the main office, it was made quite clear that it was not okay to do so.

While part of me wanted to pursue the fight for separation of church and state, I chose to focus on my teaching instead– I could only swim up one stream at a time.

And then I left to teach here in Charlottesville. Your article reminded me why.
