Three months: CHS attacker goes to jail

Vernon Howard, one of the ringleaders in a series of attacks on UVA students that roiled Charlottesville three years ago, was given a 12-month sentence for driving with a suspended license.

Nine months were suspended, and Howard, 20, was remanded into custody following the November 2 trial.

"That's not an insignificant sentence," says Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Joe Platania. "If he does it again, he's got nine months hanging over his head."

Howard has four prior convictions, including three for driving with a revoked license.

The Hook was unable to reach defense attorney Fred Heblich by press time.
