Summer's coming
Trees are bare, the lawn is brown, and snow flurries are blowing by my window this morning. Is it that time of year again… time to start thinking about swimsuits and sun block? Yep, it’s true. Registration for summer camping programs is already in full swing.
To help families sort through the myriad possibilities available for filling up the sizzling season with fun, St. Anne’s-Belfield Parents’ Association hosts their 4th Annual Summer Opportunities Fair on February 24. Representatives from more than 35 summer programs will gather in one big room, allowing parents and kids the chance to sample a wide variety of offerings from volleyball to math enrichment, swimming lessons to travel adventure in Tahiti.
Local day camp favorites will be represented, including traditionalists like Triple C Camp and Camp Friendship with arts and crafts, swimming, horseback riding, and general good times in the woods. STAB’s own program includes academics; Tandem Friends School has all kinds of arts; Boar’s Head Inn gives top seed to sports; and The Little Gym offers high-energy air-conditioned action.
Kids who are ready to break away will find a number of sleepover camping experiences from which to choose. Boys can take a look at programs such as Camp Virginia and Camp Greenbrier, while girls can scope out places like Camp Allegheny and Camp Rim Rock. Coed camps are also available, including Camp Hanover and Westview on the James, both with a Christian orientation.
New this year is an increased diversity of program offerings for the over-12 crowd. Among these are Vision Service Adventures, which combines community service, outdoor adventure, and cultural exchange in places as diverse as Australia, Alaska, and Guadeloupe. Intrepid teens can discover travel adventure with Moondance, M.O.L.E.S. (Mountain State Outdoor Leadership and Environmental School), and Action Quest. Other opportunities include volunteer experiences at places like the Virginia Discovery Museum and the UVA Museum of Art.
From preschool to adult, there’s no better way to explore all the warm weather possibilities than the Summer Opportunities Fair.
