Extra police out this weekend
While you’re likely to see a lot of green as you celebrate this weekend at your favorite bar or at a friend’s party, you’ll also be seeing a lot of blue. According to a news release, the Albemarle County Police will have extra officers on the roads March 14-17 looking for folks who many have had a few too many this St. Patrick’s Day weekend.
In 2006, the release says, nearly half (44 percent) of the 105 drivers involved in fatal crashes on St. Patrick’s Day had a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher–that is, they were legally drunk.
In 2007, County officers made 276 DUI arrests, 45 more than they made in 2006.
Police are asking folks to designate a sober driver if they’re planning to celebrate, or to call a friend, a taxi, or a family member if they’re feeling tipsy. Also, if someone you know is about to drive drunk, they recommend taking his/her keys and helping him or her find another way home. And if you spot someone swerving around on the road, call 911.
