A garage in Staunton has allegedly been the epicenter of a prostitution and pornography ring in Staunton. The Staunton News Leader reports that 39-year-old Wayne Gill of Gill’s Auto Repair has been arrested on charges of child pornography and prostitution after he paid a 17-year-old girl $300 in exchange for oral sex and having the act filmed, according to Staunton police. The incident reportedly happened in a back room at the repair shop, where police confiscated 73 pornographic VHS tapes and DVDs, computers, a sex toy, digital cameras, and a blow-up doll.

Two years ago, Raelyn Balfour drove to work at the JAG School like any other day, only this time, she forgot to drop her 9-month-old son, Bryce, off at the babysitter. A Charlottesville jury acquitted her of involuntary manslaughter in January 2008. Thanks to a clutch three-pointer from Mamadi Diane to give his team the lead with 39 seconds remaining, the UVA men’s basketball team beat Maryland 68-63 in its regular season finale, to finish with a record of 10-17. With the win, the 2008-09 squad avoided becoming the first Cavalier team since 1969 to finish the regular season with fewer than 10 wins. Still, for a worse winning percentage, one has to go all the way back to the 1966-67 season, when the Cavaliers went 9-17 for .360, a hair short of this year’s mark of .370. The Cavaliers face Boston College on Thursday, March 12 at 9pm in the first round of the ACC Tournament.

A federal judge in California has dismissed Charlottesville native and Internet entrepreneur Halsey Minor’s class-action lawsuit against auction house Sotheby’s. Minor’s suit had accused Sotheby’s of fraud and breach of fiduciary duty because he alleged that Sotheby’s sold him Edward Hicks’ “Peaceable Kingdom with the Leopard of Serenity” without telling him it had been given to Sotheby’s by one of its creditors in order to pay off a debt. Sotheby’s original suit in New York federal court against Minor remains ongoing, and the California judgment leaves the door open for Minor to file his class action suit in New York. Sotheby’s alleges Minor won three paintings at auction for a total of $16.8 million and did not pay for them.
Saturday, March 7, with its calm breezes and above-70-degree temperatures, brought out dozens of golfers to the City’s McIntire Park golf course. A day-earlier article in the Progress suggests that this site would make a nice botannical garden.
