A new partnership between the Charlottesville Fire Department and the Chamber of Commerce wants to elevate awareness of Automatic External Defibrillators, or AEDs, in order to save lives when hearts stop.
"Operation Kickstarter," was the brainchild of Leadership Charlottesville, a Chamber enterprise that volunteered to take an inventory of every workplace AED in Charlottesville, one step toward the goals of raising awareness and, in turn, saving lives during cardiac arrest.
Anyone who wants to register their AED can visit cvilleaed.com and potentially help save a life. However, Charlottesville Fire Chief Charles Werner, who helped announce the new database May 17, says that the data is just a start.
"Even though we're making great progress in getting AEDs into buildings," says Werner, "people are reluctant to use them. So we've got to change the culture."
Operation Kickstarter plans to create an AED-finding application that will help instantly pinpoint the nearest AED when someone's heart stops beating.
"That's the next step," says Werner, estimating that app development might begin as soon as six months.
