Most like a snow day: A week after classes begin, Charlottesville schools lets students out at 12:30pm August 29 in advance of a Presidential visit by Barack Obama at the nTelos Pavilion. Albemarle sets 11:25am dismissals for seven northern elementaries.

Biggest rejection: UVA declines to host Obama's visit– saying an open-ended security cost and cancellation of up to 186 classes would be too disruptive on the second day of classes.

Biggest expansion: Online grocer Relay Foods acquires Advance Mills-based Arganica Farm Club to offer service and locally grown foods in Washington, Baltimore, and Philadelphia.

Biggest jobs expansion: The Charlottesville area adds 1,777 jobs in 2011, according to the Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Longest robbery sentence: Anthony Glen Quarles, 39, who used a box cutter in two Venable neighborhood shakedowns a year ago, is sentenced August 22 to 30 years in prison, with all but seven years suspended, according to the DP.

Most attempted murders: On the Downtown Mall August 20, Samuel Erik Wheless, 23, who police say is homeless, allegedly touches a woman inappropriately, and then brandishes a gun when confronted by a man with the woman. He's charged with attempted murder, sexual battery, and three other felonies. In Crozet, Theresa Lynn Brady, 33, is charged with trying to kill her husband by insulin injection early August 21, according to a release, and with a misdemeanor count of delaying communication with 911.

Most arrests for abduction, rape: Three city men– Bryant Lamont Jones, Lamont Martel Adams, and Deandre Lemar Stinnie– all 21, also are charged with forcible sodomy for an alleged sexual assault of a juvenile August 2.

Most attacks on cops: A grand jury indicts three men August 20 in Charlottesville Circuit Court for separate incidents of assault and battery of a law enforcement officer, the Progress reports. Shawn Randolph Steppe, of Charlottesville; Stephen Campbell, of Barboursville, and Eugene Isidoro Martinez, of Charlottesville all have upcoming court dates.

Another assault on an officer: Megan Kayo, 24, allegedly threw her cellphone at a police officer responding to a report she was unresponsive on University Avenue around 2am August 27. Police say she was intoxicated, according to a Henry Graff NBC29 story. [Sept. 3, 2013 update: the charges have since been dropped and the records expunged]

Most horrible freak accident: Two 19-year-old college students are killed when a coal-loaded train derails at the trestle where they're sitting in Ellicott City, Maryland. Elizabeth Nass, a student at JMU, and Rose Mayr, a student at University of Delaware, were preparing to head back to their respective schools when several cars of the CSX train derailed and suffocated them under tons of coal on August 20, the Washington Post reports.

Latest traffic fatality: Thomas Eutsler, 66, of Waynesboro, was heading west on the Rockfish Gap Turnpike part of U.S. 250 around 7:30pm August 26 when his 1998 Dodge Stratus ran off the Afton Mountain road into an embankment on the right, flipped and landed upside down in the eastbound lane. Eutsler died at the UVA Medical Center. At press time, police have not determined the cause of the crash in Albemarle's seventh fatality this year.

Worst plane crash: Brian Forrest Hall, 50, of Pittsburgh, dies August 26 just inside the George Washington National Park near the Rockingham/Augusta county lines. Enroute from Wilmington, North Carolina, to Harrisonburg, Hall was the sole occupant of his 1975 single-engine, fixed-wing Beechcraft, the News Leader reports.

Worst fire: One hundred firefighters battle a blaze in the 600 block of Greenwood Road August 26, NBC29 reports. Firefighters arrive around 9am to see flames shooting out of the handsome slate-roofed home, which, located near famed Mirador, appeared later to be a total or near-total loss. The cause remains under investigation.

Worst George Huguely dis: GQ magazine takes issue with the convicted girlfriend killer's courtroom fashion sense and lack of a tie in court in an August 22 piece, "How not to dress for your murder retrial."
