Prelim waived: Crozet mom in court in attempted murder

In her first courtroom appearance since her arrest for the alleged attempted murder of her husband by insulin injection, Theresa Brady, bound by shackles and wearing a red jailhouse jumpsuit, was briefly in Albemarle Charlottesville Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court November 5.

Brady stood before the judge with her attorney, Bonnie Lepold, and awkwardly reached her handcuffed wrists up to the bench to sign the preliminary hearing waiver.

Her August 21 arrest at her home in high-end subdivision Foxchase near Crozet sent shockwaves through the community. Brady, 33, is married to James A. Brady, a captain in Albemarle Fire and Rescue, and the couple have two young children.

According to a search warrant affidavit, James Brady awakened around 2am August 21 to a prick in his abdomen and became suspicious when his wife, who had a flashlight in bed, claimed she'd accidentally scratched him with her fingernail, and then two syringes allegedly fell out of her shorts.

That incident followed a week in which he had been vomiting uncontrollably for six days and had lost 15 pounds, according to the affidavit.

Along with the attempted murder charge, Theresa Brady faces a misdemeanor charge for allegedly hanging up the phone when her husband tried to call 911.

Her case goes to the grand jury December 3, and she remains in Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail.
