Amtrak's Richmond: Staples Mill gets fifth morning northbound train

The state subsidy that created the new daily train service that reached Charlottesville last October and then smashed ridership goals allows Amtrak to launch a similar service augmention for Richmond on Tuesday, July 20. This new train features 7am northbound departures on weekdays, giving Richmond's Staples Mill Station hourly departures–- five in all–- to the Northeast Corridor as well as an additional return trip from Washington. As with Charlottesville, the new train is an extension of Amtrak's Northeast Regional service, giving passengers the chance to ride a single seat all the way to Boston.

Recently, I rode the daily from Charlottesville to DC with two friends and we were let off right at L'Enfant Plaza ( this is not a regular stop, so ask the conductor if you want to detrain at this point); a short walk to the Smithsonian and many wonderful free art museums. Lunch at the American Indian Museum was a taste treat of many new delicious recipes I'd never sampled before. Unfortunalely, the return train was delayed by over 100 degree temperatures, but drinks, dinner and shopping at Union Station provided ample fun for the three of us, and a relaxed time to catch up and spend time together without the hassel of driving or parking. I'd travel by train, rather than car, whenever possible.
