I'm tired of being a secretary; I think I'll take up modeling. That should be easy, according to everything I've been told by my potential employers, the W.I.S.H. Shopping Network. After all, their website (wishstars.com) guarantees on-the-job training, free clothes, worldwide exposure, and excitement– how can I lose?

Judging by their response to the picture I sent, I expect I'll be on the cover of Cosmo very soon. Even though I chose a picture in which I look 55 pounds overweight, am clad in sweatpants and am looking away from the camera, their response was enough to turn my head.

"Congratulations On Your 'Super Look' Being Selected as one of our Professional Fashion Print Models!" their email began. "We are most honored to have you consider signing with our Network! (We do not select everyone that applies, only the very best looking models.)"

Just think– if I were a knockout when that picture was taken a decade ago, by now I must be Cindy Crawford's worst nightmare: I've lost the weight, and my new glasses are a lot more flattering.

Eagerly I perused the contract, an odd mix of legalese ("Whereas, both parties agree to the terms below, therefore, this contract is binding"), startling asides ("Fee helps to eliminate models running off with clothes and then not modeling for us"), and more exclamation points than you can shake a stick at ("Fee is Guaranteed Refunded only through the Gross Revenue Share Plan! This means there is NO RISK involved in signing with our network!").

That's a relief, because they want me to pay a "one-time Service Fee of $289." But the contract ends on a reassuring note: "W.I.S.H. is a Christian Family Owned Company & Member of the Better Business Bureau of NE Pa. and 'GOLD' WEB CHAMBER OF COMMERCE!" In fact, W.I.S.H. never misses a chance to tout its rectitude; its mission is "to promote products and services that can best serve mankind in a positive fashion"; it "maintains the highest ethical, moral and professional standards"; and it reminds us of its alleged Christianity at every turn.

As for its membership in the BBB, I have a new theory: the more frequently a business brings up its membership in the Better Business Bureau, the more likely it is to be a scam– which, of course, is all the W.I.S.H. Shopping Network is. I would have been hard-pressed to say how the scam works, however, simply by studying the eight pages of contract terms, testimonials, and "guaranteed services and benefits" I got in return for my fetching photo. First, there's an "E-book CD" that will be sold on Amazon.com (which is how they can guarantee "worldwide exposure") for $29.95; the model's cut is $10. Then there are "photo illustration assignment listings... for potential usage in Calendars, Greeting Cards, Posters, Books, Catalogs, etc., and potential earnings of $10-$1,000 on each image selected and purchased by National or Worldwide Publishers."

And then there's that "$900 Retail Value WORTH OF FASHIONS/BENEFIT SERVICES" that will be mailed to the model within 10 days of signing. Weirdest of all, however, is the "ANNUAL VACATION CERTIFICATE," which includes this perk: "When redeeming Vacation Certificate, model shall be sent a SWIMSUIT or SWIMSUIT ACCESSORY to model while on the vacation as an assignment!"

If you're thinking that no one could possibly be stupid enough to send these guys money, think again. There's a whole web page devoted to W.I.S.H. victims' stories (scamwarnings.homestead.com/), which sheds a harsh light on what the "contract" actually delivers.

After signing and paying up, the "model" receives a piece of clothing in the mail. ("Veronica" got "a black jacket that probably costs about $6 somewhere in Sears," and other veterans describe similar items. So much for the "Top Name Brand Fashions" promised in the email.) The model puts the piece of clothing on, has a picture taken, and sends it to W.I.S.H.; for most clients, apparently, the arrangement ends there; protest, no matter how dogged, is almost guaranteed to be fruitless.
