Flashback: A year in the life of a fun town
Dear Hook Readers,
For the past year and a half, week after week, I have experienced just about every sort of event that's happened in our great town. I have always wanted to make the PhotoPhile a reflection of what matters to us in this community.
So for this, my final PhotoPhile, I've put together some of my favorite moments. Although shot by me, these pictures really belong to everyone who made them happen. It's the character and friendliness of this town that make these community events so enjoyable to capture on film. I wasn't able to catch every event, but I made an effort to be diverse and interesting.
Someone once called the PhotoPhile a "mini-documentary," and I hope some of these photographic memories got into your scrapbooks, under a refrigerator magnet – or perhaps passed around the office with silly captions.
As we grow older, these events– big or small– will hold some place in history– if not in textbooks, at least in someone's memory (and in the Hook's archives). Have a happy new year, and be nice to the next PhotoPhiler.
August 31: Clark Elementary school teachers wrestle to keep the Boar's Head balloon in place.
September 11: Children from local public housing areas bounce around at the Charlottesville Redevelopment and Housing Authority Picnic at McIntire Park.
September 19: Brunswick Stew Masters John D. Clary and Lonnie Moore hand the paddle off to young Chiles Cridlin at the the Third Annual Virginia Folklife Apprenticeship Showcase
July 14: The Fairview Sea Horses host the ACAC Dolphins for their annual swim meet. The event has become quite the battle royal and draws huge crowds.
March 19: Isaih gets a laugh from DMB and crew at the opening of the new Music Resource Center home, former site of the former Mt. Zion Baptist Church on Ridge Street.
May 29: The final Kite Day atop Brown's Mountain.
August 06: Lou Lopez gets is ready to play polo, a favorite summer tradition down Old Lynchburg Road.
June 30: Inmate Shaun Luck smooched mom Angaleen Goodloe at the Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail GED Graduation.
April 24: Miss and Teen Miss Albemarle, Karla Norman and Erika Uhlig, float down Market Street during the 2004 Dogwood Parade.
January 11: Scott Osborne dodges some wreckage at the Freestyle-sponsored DoubleCross competition at Wintergreen Ski Resort.
July 10: Khason Rodgers gets to ride a cool demo bike at the Alliance for Community Choice in Transportation Bicycle Rodeo at Buford Elementary School, an event designed to teach kids about bicycle safety.
October 20: Bartlett Tree Experts' Rob Springer teaches Batesvillians some chainsaw safety. Participants were rewarded with yummy apple butter.
